Local files will not even show on iphone

I have local files that are showing up on my desktop (MacBook Air, updated software) and I am trying ot download the local files onto my iphone (software updated), but the songs will not even show up on the playlist. The songs that are available on Spotify are showing up and have downloaded, but the other local file songs are simply just not even there. I have had this probelm in the past but typically I could still see the files in grey, but they are not even showing up. I am connected to the same wifi network and nothing will work. How can I get these local files to download on my iphone. I can listen to them on my laptop just fine (althoguth they won't download for offline listening). Can someone please help because this is extremely annoying and inconvienent.
