New version 1.x is unusably slow (ios 7, iphone 5)

Solved!

New version 1.x is unusably slow (ios 7, iphone 5)

Update 4/24: New build 1.1.0.2549 seems to be available on the app store with an apology in the app description... I'm still testing it out but many users here report the problem is solved.

Update 4/20: User named Matt Suda (mod?) has posted in this thread to expect an app update this week. No official word.

Update 4/07-ish: Spotify support says they are aware of the problem and "looking into it."

Spotify just upgraded itself to the newest 1.0 version on my iPhone 5 (iOS 7.1). The update renders the app unusably slow. After using it for several hours I had to revert back to the Apple Music app. Things I noticed:

- After augmenting a playlist (deleting a track, for example), the app is unresponsive for ~5 second.

- Clicking "Share" from the new popup menu renders the app unresponsive for ~5 seconds, and then executes several actions all at once.

- The (REV, PLAY, FWD) controls from the lock screen are unresponsive after the first command. Tracks take about 5-10 seconds to switch, and if I keep pressing FWD, for example, the requests seem to be queued, executing over the next minute at random times.

- Scrolling becomes slow / unresponsive. I must wait 5-10 seconds for scrolling in any list to be re-enabled.

Usability-wise I am unimpressed with the new search / discovery feature. I found it difficult to view all albums by a particular artist. I have to search, then scroll down to Albums, and then click on Albums to view all of them. Maybe there were more albums listed in the previous version?

Anyone else having these issues? The app is basically unusable at this stage, so I'm using the built in Apple Music app. Tempted to unsubscribe until the issue is resolved.

Hi David,

I have a question, it would seem to me that on my laptop computer spotify works fine. On my iphone however before the update it was fine. After the update i noticed that when i press play it takes a few moments before it realizes i press play or not just play but any song that i click. Im a very happy spotify user and overall i have been really happy with my service. I was just wondering if there was going to be a bug fix update for it because its very annoying.

Thanks,

Jordan

Matt are you a dev / mod / official here? I added your comment to the original post.

@spotify_user_48 No, I am not a mod or an official Spotify employee. I am a Spotify Community Rock Star. I am trusted by Spotify community managers to help out people on the forums. I have access to info that allows me to help other users. I have been helping out since the forums were started back in 2012. I have lots of experience with the iOS app. There should hopefully be a new iOS update out this week that will make the app more stable as well as fix bugs.

The guys from Spotify should have tested it more. However, the iOS version should have been better as Apple charge developers every year for the privilege of writing for their devices and their reasoning is that iOS Apps are better quality because Apple test the App (hence the week delay in it being on the App Store). Looks like Apple are just taking the money for nothing...

Just wanted to share the knowlage!!! I have an iphone 4s and ever since the update, like many of you, It has lagged REALLY bad, like 30 seconds after i press skip it would skip, and if i stupidly pressed skip a few times it would then skip 30 seconds into that song, along with crashing over and over and just maing me ALMOST hate spotify. BUT I figured out how I could just have the old app back!!  I deleted the app off my phone and then went into the app store and went to the apps I have and clicked on the tab that said "apps not on this device" because I never updated the app on my ipad!! so I told it to download from there and VALA!! old PERFECT NON LAGGING spotify back on my iphone 🙂 LOVE IT!!!!

Same problem with my 4s on latest IOS

Sometime the app freeze my phone for a whole minute before i can use it again.

Make me wonder if they actually tested it before release .... Completely TERRIBLE !

Good to hear there's an update on the way.  I've been having these lagging and stability problems since the update and it's a real nuisance!

Wait. So there is no official word from Spotify, only a Power User saying they think this update will be coming soon? That's insulting. I can't believe, after so many angry messages both here and across the web, that there has been no acknoledgment from Spotify about the issue other than people relaying what they've heard from others and a known user. That's it. No offense to anyone involved, but that's ridiculous.

Goodbye, Spotify. I've been using you since you first came to the US, and paying for your service shortly after that. I really, really hope a lot of people unsubbed because of this, it's the only way you'll become a better company in the future. 'twas a nice few years.

This release makes me madder every day as I restart this piece of crap app 20x per day. I love clicking next track 8 times in frustration because it does not react then having it skip ahead slowly every 30 seconds, then hangs. Nice work spotify. Maybe you should outsource your development andtesting team. They suck

I have 2 ios devices with with Thursday's issue. It is not the device. It is bad software.

I'd say try the competition. Rhymes with "Hey, Leo".

Better, cleaner UI. And, more importantly, it actually works on my iPhone. Imagine that.

@mr_civil @I have official word from a developer that a bug fix update (version 1.1) is coming soon. I would not post false information. Are you expecting Spotify to send out a press release before every update saying that it is coming soon? Standard Spotify policy is for them not to tell users when an update is coming. @SpotifyCares on Twitter will tell users that problems will "hopefully be fixed soon". No expected release date for a new update is ever given. I am being nice enough to tell you that version 1.1 is coming soon.

Matt: I meant no disrespect to you. The fact remains that you are not Spotify staff, you just have connections to a developer. It's not about trusting the veracity of your information, it's about Spotfiy not speaking up themselves. My complaint isn't directed to or even involving you, it's that Spotify hasn't issued any "official" word on the matter, and that the only people saying things are ussers such as yourself.

Apologies if it seemed I was questioning you, I wasn't.

It's ok, I didn't sense any disrespect. I'm just here to help out. 😃

As I said "Standard Spotify policy is for them not to tell users when an update is coming. @SpotifyCares on Twitter will tell users that problems will "hopefully be fixed soon". No expected release date for a new update is ever given."

Announcements are only made when updates have been released.

Spotify cannot promise a release date becuase Apple can take up to a week to review all iOS updates.

Also it's worth noting that a lot of app developers that make iOS apps follow the same policy and don't notify users when things will be fixed. Usually announcements are made when there are updates.

Not to be rude, but look around at other companies and see how many actually will give an update on every little problem.

Does Rdio have a support forum with users like us to help out? What about the others?

I appreciate your help letting us know. I understand the policy and can see how it might be helpful for your run of the mill situation. However, this is not a run of the mill situation, it's a total fiasco that is making the app close to unusual for many customers. It's not a limited scenario that affects a few people on one style of phone with certain other apps installed. Possibly the normal way of doing this may not be appropriate. 😉

I get what you're saying, Matt. But this isn't just an issue, it's an unusuable app that has caused a lot of problems for a lot of people for a (relatively) long time with no acknowledgment from Spotify that the issue was being addressed other than users such as yourself. I don't even think a Spotify staff member has popped into this thread (correct me if I'm wrong) in pages and pages of replies, with tons of people saying they want to know what's going on.

The scope of the problem is large enough—and Spotify's presence large enough—that an acknowlegment should have been made. What's required isn't an "update", it's a recoded API (hence the delay). Big difference, one that merits a post on Spotify's boards somewhere, or a blog post.

In regard to Rdio, they do have a support forum. And, more importantly, they don't bury their contact information under layers of poorly designed pages (the UI here is lacking). It's right there on the side of their Help page: Email Us. You have to dig to find that info here on Spotify. Customer service trumps all in the end, for me at least.

There isn't a direct post on the fourm, but @SpotifyCares posted the following tweets on Twitter about a fix coming:

https://twitter.com/SpotifyCares/status/458331320574566401

https://twitter.com/SpotifyCares/status/458258359792459777

Those are some of the most recent tweets I could find. There are so many support tweets that I could be scrolling forever.

I'll post more info in this thread when the update comes. Shouldn't be too long of a wait hopefully.

Matt, I certainly admire your tenacity. But I don't think you are understanding my complaint (and that of many others here).

You are a user. A dedicated one. An informed one. A tenacious one. But still, a user.

Spotify hasn't addressed this issue directly. Sure, on their Twitter support page they have. But only in response to complaints. Look at their main feed. Not a single announcement about the issue. Not one. Only replies to complaints such as the ones you posted below, which you have to get at by looking at conversations. No tweet, no blog post, no announcement on their website. That, my friend, is poor customer service.

You seem to have a horse in this race, I'm not sure why. But for my part it's too late. I've already fallen in love with the look and responsiveness of Rdio's app/website/Mac platform. Cleaner, better organized, and get this: I contacted them with a question and actually got a reply. I'm just keeping my Spotify account around long enough to make sure I get all my albums (so far, no missing ones) then it's bye bye Spotfiy.

EDIT:

https://twitter.com/Spotify

https://twitter.com/SpotifyCares/

Again, nothing in their main feed. You have to go to conversation mode, open up a conversation, then get at what they are talking about. Bad bad bad.

Agree with everything said by mr_civil.

Spotify have lost me as a premium user over this whole debacle. All companies will experience problems with their products / services occasionally, such is life. Where a problem is a serious one that extends over a period of weeks I would expect any seriously concerned company to at least have the decency to offer an explanation and information about the nature of the problem, what's involved in fixing it etc.

If the company concerned can't be bothered with any of this then I can't be bothered to continue paying them for the service, I'll source an alternative, there are plenty.
