My Question or Issue

Hi! I’m a 15 year old who really enjoys his music, but afternoons receiving a hand-me-down phone I have found that I have not been able to download Spotify. This really frustrates me (and my parents, as I constantly borrow their phones to listen to my music) because of the fact that I have a lot of playlists on Spotify that I really like. Transferring them to other apps is difficult and time consuming, and finding other apps compatible with this iOS is very difficult. If someone has a solution or way  to download it on this old device, I would be very thankful!!!

 Hey @Fishboy24

I know a way to get old versions of iOS apps, but I'm not sure if it still works. Regardless, I will give you the steps.

This method requires access to a Windows or Mac computer. The links I will provide will pertain to Windows, but I can provide links for Mac if you need them.

In old versions of iTunes, you could access the app store. This led you to be able to download older versions of apps.

If you have iTunes already installed, you will need to remove it. Make a duplicate of your iTunes folder (in Music > iTunes) and name it something else so that you do not lose any data.

Please install iTunes version 12.6.5.3 to your computer. During setup, I recommend disabling Use iTunes as the default player for audio files, and Automatically update iTunes and other Apple software.

After you install iTunes, you'll need to sign into your Apple ID, and authorize the computer.

  1. Click on Account on the Menu Bar, and select Sign In...

     2. After you sign in, go back to Account, and select Authorize this computer...

You can then navigate to the App Store by clicking on the dropdown in the top left corner, selecting Edit Menu, and adding Apps.

You can then navigate to the App Store, and search for Spotify.

Once you've found Spotify, please follow these steps to transfer the app to your phone.

If syncing your phone through iTunes fails to install Spotify, there is something else you can try.

Downloading Spotify onto iTunes on your computer also adds it to your Apple account. If you open the App Store on your phone and navigate to the purchases section, you should be able to see Spotify with a little Cloud-download icon. Here's an example with Instagram in this screenshot.

It will likely prompt you that the newest version is not compatible, and ask you if you'd like to download an older version.

I used this method years ago with an iPhone 3GS. I do not know if it still works, as I've since switched to Android.

I hope this solution works for you! Let me know how it goes, as I'm curious if this method still works.
