Unable to Download Podcast Episodes on Android Devices

We’ve received reports that users are having issues downloading podcast episodes (mainly with video) on their Android devices. The process seems to take a long time to complete and eventually fails.

I'm also having this issue. Has worked fine on my wifi for years and all of a sudden stopped. Music works fine, it's just the podcasts. Uninstalled and reinstalled and still doesn't work.

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching out!

We just wanted wanted to confirm if you happen to have an Eero router? There were some reports about the same issue some time ago and they were connected to it as mentioned here. Can you also let us know if this happens across all podcasts or just specific ones? If it's the latter, it'd be really helpful if you can share some links so we can check.

Apart from that, since this seems to be happening on both iOS and Android, we want to narrow down the root cause so it'd be great if you can try the following:

  • Test on a different device, for example a PC
  • Try on a different WiFi network
  • Restart your router and double-check its settings as mentioned in this guide
  • In case you're trying to download a video podcast, try audio-only by toggling this on in the app's Settings -> Data-saving and offline -> Downloads and streaming

Keep us posted.

I'm experiencing the same issues listed by alelap in their post, all since the most recent update. I've tried each of the above listed solutions proposed in the other posts and see no improvement.

I'm able to d/l over cellular with no issue, and I'm able to d/l over wi-fi to another android device which I did not allow the update to go through on.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your replies here and welcome.

Would you mind sharing with us the exact troubleshooting steps you’ve tried so far? That way, we can avoid repeating any steps.

Additionally, and as mentioned above, do you happen to have an Eero router?

We’d also like to gather some additional info. Please send us:

  • The make/model and exact OS of the affected devices.
  • The exact Spotify version you’re running there.
  • Does this happen when trying to download a specific podcasts? If yes, share the link to it with us.
  • Does this happen regardless of the quality you set to download content?

Keep us in the loop!

I am having the same issue with downloading podcasts. Music works fine. I have done a clean reset. Tried on different internet connections. Tried the online chat and after 3 hours and 5 different people passing me round and still not working. It literally stopped working a week ago. Android is updated, spotify is updated, I don't have an SD card, I can download on other devices and it seems I can't get ANY resolve via the chat. Does anyone know how to fix this please?!

I am using a Samsung S10 on Android version 12. Spotify version 9.0.94.274. My phone is up to date. I have cleared the storage and cache on the phones app settings. I have cleared the cache within the app. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app numerous times. I've restarted the phone. I have restarted the modem it's connected to. I have tried on a different wifi connection and on mobile data. It affects all podcasts I have tried. Music downloads fine. I do not have an SD card. My account can download episodes on my PC which is connected to the same internet network. It is just my phone that is not working. It takes a long time to download and the green circle loads then it completely disappears. Then if I go back into my episodes it shows a greyed out exclamation mark.

Hi there @stockcar391,

Thanks for reaching out. We appreciate the efforts and troubleshooting tried so far.

If the issue is only on one device, then the root cause should lie somewhere there. If you've already done a clean reinstall and different connections, then make sure Spotify has adequate permissions to save data, make sure there aren't any cache clearing apps interfering with the app's functionality and if you're using any kind of VPN, disable it as it's more than likely preventing proper server communication.

Hope this helps.

I am using a Samsung S23 Ultra with UI version 8.0, Android version 16 and the other phone I tried was an A14 (unsure of OS, I don't have the phone with me).

The Spotify version on the S23 is 9.0.94.274.

As far the podcast, anything greater than 30 minutes falls, but two for instance are The PBD Podcast and Joe Rogan.

The d/l quality does not matter and it also doesn't matter if video is or is not part of the d/l, it still fails.

Turn off wi-fi to d/l over cellular and rapid successful d/l occurs.

Everything was working fine until the latest software update from the Play Store.
