Radio stuck on loading symbol - ios 5.1.1

Solved!

Radio stuck on loading symbol - ios 5.1.1

The spotify radio will not load on my iphone 4s running 5.1.1 nor will it give me the chance to search within the Radio tab of the app.  I'm running on AT&T 4G

I have tried with no success:
Launch radio from playlist

Launch radio from single song

Close all background apps

Re-install on the iphone

Hard Reset of the iphone

The app will play my playlists and other search music with no problem but the Radio just doesn't want to get passed the loading screen.  The radio works fine on my wife's iphone.

I get what you're saying that Spotify possibly interacts with other apps, but I think what you're seeing is more of a resource sharing issue. The APIs that Spotify and Pandora use are most likely almost identical, so it kind of makes sense that they would conflict.

I'm looking for a downstream issue, mainly related to networking on the device. Onavo causing issues makes perfect sense; it's an application that compresses data and delivers it to applications running on the device. Onavo is agnostic as far as what apps it compresses data for. It literally redirects your data stream to Onavo servers, compresses it, and delivers it to the device (kinda like what AOL used to do with dial-up). Spotify disallowing that isn't a problem with Spotify, it's with the device config. I'm hoping we can find a common app or list of apps that reside on our devices that behave similarly.

...but Onavo does keep track of what apps it is compressing data for. Ohterwise it would be impossible to get a report over compression rates linked to app name.

So it seems it would be possible for Onavo to create a feature that lets us decice for what apps we want compression. And would that not solve the problem?

As I see it, the problem in my case was the Onavo app, not the Spotify app. It is the Onavo app that has created the limitation of data access for the Spotify app.

But one wonders why not the whole Spotify app stops working then. Does the Radio function demand som much more resources or bandwidth?

Or is it perhaps a third party feature that Spotify have embedded into their app - one that they don't have complete programming capabilities for?

You're totally right, Gustaf. If Onavo created an app exclusion list, you'd still be able to use it.

I'd imagine the issue is Onavo redirecting network traffict to their servers. I'm actually suprised that Spotify will stream through a 3rd party at all.

Although I've received e-mails from Spotify support trying to troubleshoot my problem on my iPhone (same as everyone else's), nothing seems to work for me.  I strongly suggest that we all just ignore Spotify until they come up with an app that really functions properly on our devices regardless of what other normal apps we have.  Spotify needs to co-exist on the device or else it's not worth having.

not sure. i've tried all the common sense approaches. even had it installed on a fresh 5.1.1 reformat

i don't have any of these compression apps.

There is an update that just came out today, and it still doesnt fix this issue. I have only seen the loading indicator on the radio screen since the radio feature launched on the spotify mobile app, and it doesnt matter if I am on WiFi or 3G. It is perplexing to me why they have not issued a fix for this after so many releases....

This was resolved for me by disabling the Onavo profile.  The compression does something that breaks the radio.  Spread the word!

I dont use the Onavo profile and I still have the problem

same here.. reducing my motivation to pay 10/month for premium service quite a bit 😞

I found a way of making the radio work for 1 session over 3G/4G (but I came to the forum hoping for a more permanent answer). It requires a jailbreak and SBSettings:

1) Open Spotify radio (with the spinner)

2) Swipe the top bar to access SBSettings and turn off Data

3) Wait for the radio to say 'Radio is not available while offline'

4) Turn Data back on

The radio should then work after loading, it does for me anyway. I've not tested if non-jailbroken users can do that same trick by switching to the settings app and back.

Let me know if that was helpful, temporarily at least.

Come on Spotify devs, get on the case!

I think it's quite clever and wonderfully geeky of you to have found a sneaky workaround for this problem. However, I can't help but wonder:

1. Should we really have to go trough all that trouble to get a legitimate, App Store-registered application to work?

2. Are we really so limited in Internet Radio alternatives that we must go through all that pain in order to get some music?

Same issuse as most. Radio will only start when on WiFi. It will continue playing if I start the Radio on WiFi once I go into 3G, but if Radio is not engaged, it will get stuck on loading when trying to activate.

Other Spotify streaming works fine over 3G. Normal playlists, etc.

This has happened throughout all the latest updates...

This is on iPhone 4S, on ATT.

I finally solved my issue, I had a program installed called WeReward, which pays money to track your phone surfing habits. It installs a Neilson profile that I believe runs your http requests through a proxy server. I removed WeReward, the Neilson profile, and restarted my phone, and now my radio works over 3G! Hallelujah....only been 3 months

This is working for me. It's a pain to have to do but it is working. Thank you, jlad. I'm almost tempted to reinstate my premium membership, although what turned me off wasn't the radio not working, but Spotify's handling (or mishandling) of the issue.

Resetting the phone's network settings finally fixed it for me!

Now that iOS 6 is out, anyone have a solid fix for this? (ATT US)

I tried

  • App Re-install
  • Network Settings Reset
  • Full restore from iCloud

I have an iPhone 5 coming soon, and hoping this issue does not carry over to that phone.

I really dont want to set up my phone from scratch if at all possible.

I have this same problem.  Been searching for an answer on your sites, but nothing found.  I did log out and back in.  Didn't work.  Any other ideas?  Looks like the comments on this are older so hopefully there is an answer now - just can't find it, if it's out there.

I personally have giving up using the Radio. It works when it wants to and it's very slow if it does. I am back to using Pandora as its so fast loading and works everytime. I pay Spotify more money and am barely using it anymore and I am questioning if I want to continue. I thought by paying it would mean better service and updates but how long has this problem being going on without any official word....at least a we are working on it would be nice. They shouldn't release things that are still in beta. Kind of like the new Apple IOS 6...finding all kinds of bugs now. Owell guess companies think we are beta testers now and think we can just live with the problems and they don't have to say jack about them.... Well I think that may change when they see less and less people using their services for these reasons.

Switched from AT&T 3GS to Verizon iPhone 5. Onavo carried over to new phone via iTunes, although there was no Onavo profile in Settings > General. Tried deleting Onavo & un/reinstalls with Spotify with a couple phone reboots thrown in, LOL. What finally worked was Reset Network Settings in Settings > General > Reset. Although from reading above this hasn't worked for everyone, thought I'd share what worked for me. Good luck, y'all.

Well.....Mine isn't working again ::sadface::
