Spotify Connect is not available when screen is off iOS

Hi, 

I connect and control my older iphones (4S and 4) sitting in various speakers using spotify connect. The only problem is that the screen needs to be on at all times, if it is off the connection to the phone is grey on the controlling phone, and I must walk over to open the phone again.  

I am sure that the screen can`t last forever being on at all times. Hope there is a way to make it possible to control when screen is shut.
