Spotify in ipod

Probably replied 1,000 times; but to be honest with you it is confusing.

I was thinking about buying a music device to my son so he can choose his own music. Something easy: 4 button. An ipod shuffle was my idea.

He already have some spotify lists.

So I was thinking, "hey! a shuffle it is: $50 for Christmas"

Ive seen info in google about syncing ipods to spotify and at the same time posts in spotify telling me it is not possible. But posts are 2012 (quite updated).

So what is current situation? can I? or can I not sync spotify with an ipod?

(Please note: no iphone for this guy yet. Too young and screens are too fragile and expensive)
