Spotify is defaulting to use my local file instead of the spotify version. How do I turn this off

This is really annoying because if I dont have the entire playlist synced then I have missing songs when I am not home in my playlist even if they are in the spotify catalogue.

Hey!

You can mark all songs in your playlist (ctrl/cmd + A) and right-click a song.

Then you should see an option to "Unlink Track" - which means it doesn't take your local files anymore but the ones from the Spotify catalogue. After that it has to resync those songs if the playlist was available for offline use.

If you want to do that for all your local files, you have to click on Library - mark all songs again and do the same there.
