As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.
This is not an iOS or apple issue:
My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.
On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526
The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!
Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1
If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.
Hey folks,
Thanks again for raising this to the community.
Spotify is rolling out a new way to control your volume when listening via Spotify Connect on your iPhone. Instead of using the hardware buttons on the side of your iOS device, you will now need to use the volume slider within the Spotify app. This change is a result of Apple discontinuing the technology that powers some of Spotify’s volume controls.
We'll be here if anything else comes up.
This isn’t resolved - saying tough luck it now doesn’t work isn’t a solution. Please fix ASAP
It doesn’t wooork. On my ipad it works, old iphone 6s works, but not my main iphone 11 pro. Annoying af
Same here - last few days using Spotify app on iPhone, connecting to Sonos speakers through app. Volume buttons have worked perfectly for years. Now can’t find any way of getting them to work. Still working on iPad (though very jerky - can’t say working well). I’ve tried settings in both Spotify app and iPhone Spotify settings, and can’t see anywhere to switch on physical volume controls.
I have also experiencing this issue for the past 5 days or so. I hope it gets fixed.
I think calling this a "solution" is being pretty generous.
This probably explains why the Digital Crown on the Apple Watch has stopped working for volume control too.
Which is weird because that implies the watch app sends volume change events to the cloud and then back down the phone.
I also don't understand why this feature would be removed. It's like their goal is to make the app functionality bad as possible. Somebody needs to tell the CEO he has bad UI/UX skills.
Spotify are claiming this is "solved" now and the solution is to use the volume slider in app.
They're blaming iOS for changing which is a bit of a stretch, IMO.
This is not a practical solution - please fix asap!!!
I just spoke with Spotify Support about this. I was going INSANE. Thought I was crazy and realized it’s not just me. So listen to this I pretty much go to them explaining what you just said. This was their response: “Thank you for letting us know. Due to updates on iOS, Spotify users no longer can use their iPhone's volume controls to change the volume on connected speakers. Instead, please use the volume slider in the device menu. in the meantime, we recommend keeping up-to-date with future updates. If there's anything else we can help you. Let us know! We'll be here in the meantime.“
After calling bull&@$# cuz my roommate can use it with the same make and model they reply with this:
” At the moment, this is what we can disclose. This feature is currently unavailable for iPhone users. We hear you and have submitted this to the corresponding team. In the meantime, if there's anything else we can help you with, let us know!“
The solution outlined is not acceptable
Spotify Connect volume control using the volume buttons on iPhones is essential
Is the reason you are not fixing this issue becasuse the department that looked after these issue part of the resent redundancies
Glad I’m not the only one having a problem controlling the volume of media I’m sending to my speakers with Spotify connect.
interestingly, I’ve found that if I close the Spotify app on my iPhone while media is playing on my speaker, then reopen the app, I can control the volume again with my phones volume buttons. However, randomly it seems, the ability goes away and they’ll stop working until I restart the app again.
Good that we can use that volume slider though. At least this is a bit easier than restarting the app each time the issue occurs.
As other said, totally unacceptable to pay for Spotify and loose this functionality. Will be looking over other solutions if not resolved in a couple of days.
I have the same problem with the Spotify app on iOS and iPadOS. To resolve it, use the temporary solution to force close the app and reopen it.
To reproduce:
1. Open the Spotify app.
2. Play music on the device itself, Spotify Connect is not used at this point.
The volume controls on the iOS/iPadOS device itself still work.
3. Use Spotify connect to play music on another Spofify Connect supported device.
at this point, the volume controls on the iOS/iPadOS device itself do not work anymore.
4. Force close the Spotify app.
5. Reopen the Spotify app.
Now the volume controls on the iOS/iPadOS device itself work again.
@Spotify: It is an annoying bug that needs to be fixed a.s.a.p.
This sounds crazy, will lead to massive cancellations. Spotify should elaborate on wether this is Apple trying to push people to Apple Music. If it is, some people would maybe hold off a little longer before cancelling.
This is NOT a iOS issue!
My non working version of spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

That work around used to work. As of a day or so ago, it stopped working. Now there is a slide bar at the bottom of the list if devices when you are connected to a Spotify Connect supported device. Its a bit choppy slider, but works. Would rather the volume buttons on the iPhone/iPad would work the way they used to. I could adjust the volume without having to look at/open my phone or app. Not happy with this change.
The fact that Spotify has marked this problem as "solved" is a totally unacceptable. Also, Spotify is lying, or at least the moderator who marked this problem as "solved" is just uninformed, as this is obviously not an issue with iOS, it's an issue with Spotify Connect. When I use Tidal, or several other music apps, I am able to control my speaker with the volume control buttons on the side of the iPhone. It's ONLY Spotify Connect that is unable to have the volume of the speaker controlled by the physical volume buttons on the phone.
Like many of you, if this issue isn't resolved soon, I'll just switch to Tidal or another service very soon. This is ESSENTIAL FUNCITONALITY.
I'm having the exact same problem when using Spotify Connect to play music to a speaker. I've posted in several different threads, and then a moderator has marked those threads as solved. Very frustrating, because it's not solved.
Most recent Spotify, most recent iOS.
This is NOT an iOS issue. It's a Spotify Connect issue. I'm able to control volume with physical buttons on side of phone when playing music from my speaker through Tidal and several other music apps. It's only when playing with Spotify Connect that the physical buttons on the phone don't control the volume of the speaker. This is absolutely KEY FUNCTIONALITY, and I'll be leaving Spotify if this isn't fixed.
