Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

This is **bleep**ed up, this feature worked fine for decades and overnight it’s just taken out? No way to know and reject the update of course.

Its a huge regression of the user experience, are we all gonna unlock the phone and open the app then find the volume control slider instead of using a button come on. 
Guys too busy developing useless**bleep** like play these video clips draining the battery and data. 
Reminds me the time they removed the option to turn off the autoplay of similar songs… surprisingly back after few weeks.

This is awful, no one wants to have to unlock their phone and open the app and then have to move a slide.

How is this the best option all the engineers at Spotify can come up with, absolutely ridiculous!

And, I'm done with Spotify. What a dumb decision and poorly implemented. If you cared about a good user experience, you would have at least added a volume slider on the lock screen widget.

My Question or Issue

I used to be able to change the volume of my alexa by pressing the volume up and down button on my phone but now whenever I do that it just brings up this volume slider that I have to manually slide. How do I disable this? Its super inconvenient and I want to disable it but I could not figure out how and none of the FAQ's helped so I came here.

Whilst this is an explanation of why this is happening, it's clearly not a solution. Are there any plans to actually solve this problem by working with Apple?

Techology is suppose to be making this more efficient for the user, the toggle when casting on the new Spotify app sucks. I have an iPhone 14 Pro and a 11 which has an older version of Spotify on it. Both have Spotify.  The iPhone 11 allows me to use the volume buttons on the side to control Spotify casting volume on my echo device. The NEW Spotify version does not. I don’t understand how this an ios issue when it clearly works on my older device with the older Spotify app..

same thing happened to me as of a few days ago, I think when the Spotify app updates.  The toggle sucks and is inconvenient. Isn’t tech suppose to make the user experience BETTER? We’re going backwards!

I don't want this. My phone still has the tech to change the volume with buttons but it doesn't work. You are messing with functionality and processes that are ingrained into people's lives and listening experiences without communicating. It's frustrating and offensive.   Spotify, you make me so angry. Does anyone know if Tidal allows volume change with buttons?

This is not necessarily a solution. This requires a user to come back to the app to control the volume. Also sometimes the connection breaks between the phone's spotify and the device playing spotify. In that case, the volume icons don't even show up, you need to synch your app again to the device to gain access to the volume. I don't understand why complicate the solution but could have optimised the existing one.

Someone said their Alexa is now requiring the volume slider.  Spotify is saying it’s an Apple issue.  I am inclined to believe that this is a Spotify issue.  I used to be able to have my phone in my pocket and adjust the volume with the up/down buttons.  Now I can’t and that’s a massive downgrade in functionality.  Spotify if this is your doing don’t blame it on Apple.  Own up to the decision to degrade the utility at least.

It really isn't a solution. It's a half-assed work-around at best.

Oh. And when you try to adjust volume from your apple watch crown, you instantly get 20 pop up notifications (one from each notch on the crown) from Spotify telling you how to adjust volume.

UPDATE this functionality works on TIDAL + the UI is a cleaner. I've started my 30 day trial. Going to try it for a few days, but I'll most likely cancel my Spotify account after 9 years.
