Volume issues - silencing alarm and ringer

Hi! I’ve been running into an odd issue with iOS Spotify since installing a month or so ago. Essentially it seems as if it sometimes adjusts my phones ringer/alarm volume instead of the app’s volume. As a result I will frequently have the ringer ring loudly when it shows as silent or have my alarm ring silently in the morning! This issue occurs regardless of the device I play audio through (wired headset, Bluetooth headset, Sonos Beam over wifi)

The only thing that seems to prevent this is closing the Spotify app- once I do that the ringer and alarm go back to the volume they are set at in iOS. 

Per other posts around this i have reinstalled the app twice, deactivated the devices lock screen function in Spotify, as well as the change with buttons setting in iOS ringer and alerts menu. None has helped.
