I've got a Family/Premium account and the account out of the 6 that I use personally gets the password reset every week, which is a bit annoying.
I get an email saying the password needs to be reset "due to detected suspicious activity".
I connect to Spotify from my phone and my laptop, and I would guess the "suspicious" activity comes from the fact that I use my company's VPN (otherwise I couldn't work) and that changes IP/country every day, so maybe that's it.
Still, it's annoying, anyone has any ideas on how to make it stop?
Thanks
Hi there @Avith,
Thanks for the post.
The password reset prompt comes when our system detects suspicious activity on your account. It can sometimes be triggered if you're logging in from multiple devices, like multiple new computers or phones. It can also happen if you're travelling abroad frequently, since the system would detect that you're logging in from different countries.
In the worst case scenario, someone is trying to log in to your account multiple times with a wrong password. This can happen if your email address is leaked somewhere.
There is no way to manually stop this prompt though, as it runs on automated algorithms.
One thing you can try is to change the email associate with your account to a new one, which you don't use for other services.
Hope this info helps.
This is getting ridiculous. I have music playing my office. I have a studio project. I got flagged and a song taken down because of a VPN. Also I have to change my password almost every few days. It's absolutely ridiculous. I love playing music in my office for clients. My music included. But to be flagged. Have my music taken down, AND having to change my password is bonkers to me, just for using a VPN.
I actually went a few months since returning to Spotify after trying other services before this same "password reset for suspicious activity" email nonsense resumed. My usage behavior did not change in terms of devices and networks, yet their system detected "suspicious activity." Still pending a response from support via email with an explanation. If paid subscribers are abiding by terms of service, their passwords should not be arbitrarily reset. Definitely leaving Spotify permanently this time if they do not intend to correct their wonky "suspicious activity" algorithm.
If Spotify is unwilling to update their "suspicious activity" algorithm, a clearer explanation in automated emails as to what triggered password resents would be appreciated, especially if they will now be happening for some of us on a routine basis.
Typed my whole experience out, but Spotify glitched and deleted it.
Basically, this has probably been happening, but I don't actually get told why. Had a long chat with Support where they blamed me for it. You can only talk to Support if you are logged in, but if you can't log in, how do you get Support??
I have an email that ONLY is used by Spotify and a long random password (but apparently you can't create a 36 char pass, so Spotify must not be THAT security focused) and it is still happening. Spotify is broken. And alternatives offer the same price and features as Premium, so that's happening with the next reset.
I have a premium account. I also have to use a VPN. There is nothing "suspicious" about this, it is something millions of people do all the time. I do not need Spotify to "support" my VPN. It works fine, as it does with dozens of other cloud-based services. I only need Spotify to stop DELIBERATELY resetting my password OVER and OVER and OVER again. As people have suggested, if you must have something along these lines, at least give people a "was this you?" button to allow them to confirm there is no-one misusing their account. Fix this lazy and arrogant policy or users will look elsewhere.
Update to this post above:
I've cancelled my subscription to Spotify over this issue because it kept reoccurring. I know it's a drop in a bucket, but for me it's one less thing to pay for, and I'm not paying for the software that disrespects my privacy
I recently received an email from Spotify saying that my account was logged in from a suspicious device and they were correct in that - someone random had logged in and somehow successfully from Albania. I then reset my password immediately and secured my account. About 2hrs later I got another email from Spotify saying that my password needs to be reset due to suspicious activity on my account. Now I don’t know if people are trying to hack the account again, if the “suspicious activity” was me previously resetting my password after the first hack or if this whole thing is a scam.**bleep** , so I know they’re legit but I’m just very confused with all this leakage of my account and how it’s happening and how to stop it.

I am currently working from Spain while utilizing a VPN located in England, which has proven to be quite frustrating.
The system prompts me to change my password twice daily, including a six-digit code sent to my email. Unfortunately, I am unable to access my email on the company computer, and we are prohibited from bringing our phones into the office. Consequently, each time I am required to change my password or enter the code, I must take a break to retrieve my phone.
As a result, a significant number of individuals in my department, approximately 500, have ceased using Spotify and transitioned to SoundCloud.
I am considering canceling my Spotify subscription.
We have similar issue with Spotify regularly resetting our (my account and my spouse's) passwords due to detected suspicious activity. We are only playing Spotify in our Roku device nothing else. We are also not using VPN. It is getting really annoying.
VPN: None
Device: Roku Ultra
Number of Logged In Devices: Only 1
Log in from a different country: Never
Spotify logs us out of the app on a regular basis. Forcing us to reset our password due to detected suspicious activity. We are only playing Spotify on Roku nothing else.
We even created new account (with new email) as one moderator suggested and guess what... we are now on our 3rd account.
The main annoyance is Spotify forcibly logging us out. It would be great if we are only notified of suspicious activity and let us decide what action to take. But NO... Spotify just decides to kick us out of the app no questions asked. This is extremely annoying!!!
Same problem here. It makes my blood boil when I have to change my password every few weeks. It's REALLY pissing me off!
This has made spotify my most secure account ever. I use a new autogenerated 24 character password every 2 weeks - 1 month, tx Spotify!
Here it is, November of 2024, and this issue is still happening. Not using a VPN either, using 1 device (my PC) as well. Unreal they're just ignoring user issues like this. Pretty sure they just don't care.
Spotify should respect their privacy conscious users and stop penalizing them with harassing mandatory password resets just for using a VPN.
I understand this is not a concern to most users, but for many like myself, it is really annoying.
At least give us an opt out option for this poorly implemented security feature or train the algorithm to ignore the accounts commonly using VPNs.
This is making me not want to use Spotify.

My Question or Issue
Hello
My password keeps changing every week. I use long secure passwords but still password change. I log out of all devices before i change password.
I doubt the frequent password resets are due to "suspicious activity" since 1) I'm using spotify on my bedroom tv to fall asleep 2) and it's the only thing I do on that tv these days.
I agree that not being able to use the same password really sucks AND to make it worse I KNOW that the password I am using (painfully with my remote) is CORRECT. And the jam login in is useless since I'm not bringing my phone to my bedroom any more. I gave up - I dropped the premium and went to a different service, keeping the free account to keep my saved things.
Why?
