Spotify will not change my email address - claims it is linked to another account

I am about to cancel the email address that is linked to my spotify account. Therefore i have tried to change my email address to my gmail address. But Spotify tells me that my gmail address is linked to another spotify account. However, when I try to log in with the gmail address, and click "forgot password", Spotify claims not to have any accounts with that address. How is this possible? And what can I do to be able to use my gmail address for my current Spotify account?
