Android Troubleshooting Guide

Having issues with the Spotify app on Android? Here’s a step-by-step guide of general troubleshooting steps known to resolve a multitude of issues:

Basic Troubleshooting:

Bluetooth-Specific steps:

  • Turn Bluetooth off and then on again.
  • Re-pair the device.

Network-Specific Steps:

  • See if the issue persists in Offline or airplane mode.
  • If you're using a VPN for privacy or to mask your location, this may create some issues. Disable it temporarily to see if the behavior improves.
  • Make sure that the app has access to your cellular/WiFi connection. This can be done in your phone's settings.
  • Test if the same happens on both WiFi and mobile data.
  • If only WiFi doesn't work, try a different WiFi connection. If this works, you probably need to restart your router or contact your internet service provider for further help.
  • If it doesn't work with mobile data only:
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Navigate to Apps & Services > Apps
    3. Find and select Spotify
    4. Tap Data Usage
    5. Ensure Mobile Data is enabled
Note: The exact menu names may vary slightly depending on the device brand or Android version

Advanced troubleshooting:

  • Temporarily disable any battery- or memory-optimization services on your device or add Spotify in the list of exceptions.
  • Check if the same issue occurs on a different Android device and/or a different platform (e.g. desktop).
  • Try a different account and see if you get the same behavior. You can use the account of someone you know or create one for testing purposes (here's how to close it afterwards).
  • Remove your SD card (if your device has one) and clean reinstall the app. If this works, you might need to format the card (make sure to backup all important data on it).

Community help

If the troubleshooting didn’t help, the Community might have the answer:

  1. First, try entering your issue into the search bar to see if there’s an existing thread about it. Remember to try a few different variations of the description in case someone referred to it in a different way, i.e. Download > Offline > Internet connection, etc.
  2. If you can’t find anything via search, create a new thread, taking care to clearly title and explain your issue. Also, make sure to include the following info:
    • Your device’s make, model, and operating system.
    • The version of Spotify you’re using.
    • The troubleshooting steps you've already tried.
