Android navigation buttons hidden in landscape mode

When using the new interface in landscape mode on my phone (and phablet in my car), the Android navigation buttons that are normally shown on the right side get hidden. And to make matters worse. Swiping to show them also selects the next track. Please never hide these buttons. A music player does not have any reason to do that anyway.

Too make matters worse: this is a screenshot from my LG G6, which has a blank space where the buttons should be.
