Auto play on Android Auto

When my phone connects to the car via Bluetooth, it automatically resumes playback of the last playing track and playlist on Spotify, but I can't get this to work when connecting the same phone to the same car via usb and android auto. Every time I use android auto I have to manually press play on the android auto app in the car stereo. It's only a minor thing but I would like it to work the same on both connection methods. Any ideas how I can get this working?
