My Question or Issue
I can't seem to play those squares on the home page with a Spotify symbol in the upper left corner. I assume these are playlists created by other people.
Whenever I tap one of them the tap is acknowledged by an animation but nothing else ever happens. The app continues to play what it was just playing.
See screenshot below.
Anything else works as i would expect. Playing Albums, searching for songs etc. works like a charm. (never used Spotify before today)

This issue has been solved!
I sideloaded the latest Spotify APK from another device through ADB onto my LineageOS device. It is working without any noticeable limitation now.
It was fairly easy to resolve. The APK i got from download.spotify.com at first was just a bit hung.
So if you are wondering whether Spotify is compatible with your LineageOS device rest assured: it is compatible as of today.

From your screenshot, it looks like you're using an older version of the app. In this case, we'd suggest making sure to update the app by following the steps here.
You also mention in your original message that this is happening on a device running LineageOS. Just to confirm, do you have the same issue on any other devices running a different OS? If not, we'd recommend making sure that your device is supported by Spotify. You can check this Spotify Answer for more info.

Well, the device perfectly meets the requirements listed (if "Android OS"
includes AOSP builds).
I downloaded the APK from
[snip - Community Moderator edit] as described in another
community post since I don't have Google Play. I will try and sideload a more
recent Play APK and attempt to install it on my mobe. We'll see.
Since anything but clicking on tiles directly in the home screen works fine I
could as well live with this (very minor) limitation.
=> I am *not* complaining.

Unfortunately, we don't support LineageOS.
In this case, keep in mind that it might not be possible to use Spotify and access Spotify content through the Spotify app in that device or troubleshoot any issues properly.
If the issue persists on a supported device as well, let us know.
