My Question or Issue
Spotify ate 2GB of data very quickly, without me using it any more than usual. My normal monthly data usage is 500-600mb per month. Yet suddenly it ate almost 2gigs in a week and a half. Whats going on?? I only have 4gigs total of free data and I dont want it all wasted by some app going haywire.
Hey @xgi-pgtlr_oro,
Thanks for getting in touch about this.
To avoid using your data, make sure to download your music and enable the Offline mode. Keep in mind that if you listen to any content that's downloaded but the Offline mode isn't enabled, the app still uses mobile data.
Also, make sure to have the option Download using cellular toggled off in the app's settings, and Cellular streaming in normal or low, as higher quality uses more data. You can find more info about the app's data usage here.
Hope this helps. Keep us posted on how it goes.
Did you even read what i said? Its not about that it uses data i know that it does. Its about the sudden usage of 4 times the usual amount of data for no apparent reason.
Hey there @xgi-pgtlr_oro,
Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately we can't tell exactly what caused this surge in data usage. This might happen if you've selected multiple playlists for Download. They get automatically re-downloaded when there is an update to the playlist, the songs in the playlist, and every 30 days in general.
Other factors might be, app updates.
This is why @Eni has suggested turning off download using Cellular off.
Hope this info helps.
I have no playlists set to download and also the "Download using cellular" function is off. So it cant be that.
Hey @xgi-pgtlr_oro,
Thanks for the clarification.
In this case we'd recommend running a clean reinstall of the app, following this Guide exactly. This will assure that you're running the latest app version and that possibly corrupted cache is not causing this issue.
Keep us posted if the data consumption stays on the same level after that.
Happened to me yesterday, only worse in that within 10 minutes, Spotify downloaded 3.35GB of data on my Samsung Galaxy A53. I deleted and reinstalled the app and ensured that the app is running only offline, then downloaded all my songs again. I've been using Spotify for years, and nothing like this has ever happened. Something is definitely, as they say, up. I'm writing from Berlin, DE.
The same just happened to me yesterday. Almost 6gb of data downloaded by Spotify without me even using the app. Only later in the day, when I opened it and started playing one of my downloads (which I downloaded at least a month ago using WiFi connection), the phone showed me the usage alert! This is somwrong with Spotify app and it cost me £20 for this 6gb! This is not ok! All the solutions from support are just useless, as they assume there's nothi g wrong with the app...but I think there is!
