Local Files WILL NOT sync to my Pixel

I have tried everything I could find on the forum, but could not get my local files to sync from my computer to my phone.

My gear is:

• Google Pixel (original, American Version, not the 2)
• Mac book Pro 2017
• Spotify Premium Student

I have tried the following:

• The listed instructions on the Spotify website (i.e. make a playlist, make sure you're connected to the same wifi, click download on both devices)
• Logging in and logging back out on both desktop and mobile
• Reinstalling on both desktop and mobile
• making sure apps on both devices are up to date
• putting the songs in different playlists 
• connecting both devices to a different wifi network
• Checking my firewall (there was no firewall active so that was never an issue)

I am getting quite frustrated to pay for a service that cannot do this when services like Apple Music and even Google Music do this so readily. Spotify is quite likely about to lose a customer if this issue cannot be fixed. I would appreciate any suggestions that are different than the ones listed above that I have already tried.
