Music plays by itself after bluetooth disconnected

Music plays by itself after bluetooth disconnected

I'm having an issue with spotify playing music by itself. This happens mostly when I disconnect a bluetooth device. The app shows no music playing and the only way I can stop the music is by going into 'App Setting' on my phone and 'Force Stop' the app. To prevent this to happen I need to pause the music first on the Spotify app and then disconnect from bluetooth.

I can understand the frustration of many users including myself that this bug has not been fixed by Spotify after so long!

However I can also see that the bug is not always reproducible on different environments and test scenarios.

Android test:

- I tried Spotify on my Samsung S21 Ultra with a bluetooth Realme air 2 buds headphone

- Played a track on spotify.

- Pressed pause on spotify and then powered off the buds.

- No issue occurred. Spotify paused the playing track correctly and did NOT switch to using the phone speakers

Windows 11 test:

-  Spotify on windows 11 playing using a bluetooth dongle to a Bose Soundlink III speaker

- Played a track on spotify.

- Pressed pause on spotify and then powered off the Bose Soundlink speaker.

- Spotify immediately switched to playing on the default speakers on my PC!!!

My windows issue is 100% reproducible and happens EVERY time. So I have to remember to quit Spotify everytime otherwise it will start playing on its own when my bluetooth speaker goes to sleep after a long pause.

Hey folks,

Thank you for the detailed info you've provided.

We've forwarded this to the relevant team for further review, however we can't say when it will be addressed. For anyone who's experiencing this and hasn't posted the above details, please do so as this will help speed up the investigation.

Cheers,

Thank you for forwarding this to the developers.

What I suspect is happening is that the OS subsystem is notifying a change
in the default playback device which triggers the playback.

I have seen similar behavior happen on Mac OSx with the iTunes application
as well when connecting a Bluetooth headset, it would immediately start
playing music just on connecting a Bluetooth headset! Not sure which
developer thought that was a good idea!!!

What should be simple is for the application development team to add an
option to ignore OS playback signals and only trigger playback when the
play button is clicked.

Regards
Sanjay

Whenever I disconnect my Bluetooth headset from my handset the Spotify automatically open and start playing music in the background which is quite annoying and sometimes embarrassing too. I turned off autoplay in Spotify and also restrict spotiify to play in background but the issue remains the same.

I am having the same issue as listed above. It primarily occurs when I disconnect from my truck after using Android Auto. Everytime my phone starts playing after a few minutes.

I have a Samsung S22 ultra running on the latest software. This issue has been going on for a couple of months now and it's driving me nuts.

I'm having the exact same issue. And have been for months. I have a Samsung flip...

Hey folks,

For anyone still experiencing this, can you please share the following info (if you haven't already)?

  • Device model, OS version and Spotify version
  • Bluetooth device model this occurs with
  • Time and date of the last occurrence (including your time zone)
  • Any troubleshooting steps you've tried
  • A video of the issue (if possible) or exact steps to reproduce it

Thanks!

Same issue.

_____

Device model: Redmi Note 8 pro

OS version: Android 11 rp1q.200720.011 (MIUI 12.5.7)

Spotify version: 8.8.26.408 as also in 8.8.28.409

Bluetooth device: Xiaomi Mi True Wireless (bt earphones). Car Stereo Skoda City Go, WV. Any BT device that I own.
Time and date of the last occurrence (including your time zone): ~8:30 19-04-2023 GMT+2 (EU/Rome)
Any troubleshooting steps you've tried: reset the phone, used different devices, reinstalled Spotify

A video of the issue (if possible) or exact steps to reproduce it: (with the already On and already paired BT) start spotify, play any song, stop the song, turn off the BT device.

This is a Major issue since the music is (reasonably) annoying other people more than me.

Even people that I don't know had the same the issue. I knew that since when happened that my phone started to play loud music some people laughed and said something like: "it's spotify!"  (They meant: I know that it is annoying, it's a spotify's issue)
Imo Not really a good advertisement.

(UPDATE) There's another problem: The music starts also while in a call via Messagenet (voip) I start the bluetooth device (Vg03 bt earphones). The other side (caller) heard exclusively the music and I cannot hear anything anymore.
It Happened at ~11:40 28-04-2023 GMT+2 (EU/Rome)
Device model: Redmi Note 8 pro

OS version: Android 11 rp1q.200720.011 (MIUI 12.5.7)

Spotify version: 8.8.28.409

Same issue, Windows 11. If Spotify is open and Paused then disconnecting bluetooth headphones will BLAST spotify through my laptop speakers.

Hi. I have the same issue.
Device model: Samsung Galaxy S22 (Android 13, One UI 5.1)
Bluetooth devices: JBL Wave 200TWS
Spotify version: 8.8.50.466

As a fellow developer I can provide additional info to possible reason why this is happening.
When I disconnect the headphones I receive
{"message": "music-controls-play", "source": "music-controls-media-button-play"}

followed by
{"message": "music-controls-pause", "source": "music-controls-media-button-pause"}
right after each other (668 ms apart).

I hope this helps and we all stop annoying our colleges, when we decide to put away our headphones 😀

regards. Tomas

Hey folks,

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

@pocuj we appreciate all the info you've included in your post, it's very helpful. For the other users (@billnuss, @trueliar, @en1888), would you mind confirming if you're still having this issue?

If so, could you include in your next response the updated OS version of your device and the Spotify version you're currently running to add the info to the investigation?

We'll be on the lookout.

Same problem here.   Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G - Android v13 - Spotify v8.8.56.538

  • connect BT earbuds
  • watch Youtube video (Spotify app is not running)
  • disconnect BT earbuds
  • Spotify starts playing on phone speakers

I'm still having this problem when my phone disconnects from my car stereo (and old Sony after market head unit. Using:

* Spotify 8.8.62.492

* Galaxy S23

* Android 13

It's embarrassing at times when I suddenly realise I'm blasting music out from my pocket in public, but also if my phone's turned down low it just keeps going, using up battery and data.

Same issue for me. Samsung S23 Ultra, Spotify 8.8.68.565, Android 13.

It happens so frequently that I got used to put the hand on the low volume button as soon as I put my Bluetooth headphones back into the case, to avoid it blasting music at random. It happens even if Spotify is closed.

Hey I also found out this type of problem in my windows 11 laptop

Hey folks,

Thanks for your replies.

@Bennyrux, JustMeRich, eloipa thanks for all the info you've sent so far!

@Manan7, could you send us the info @MihailY asked for previously?

@pocuj, if you're still experiencing this, could you send us the current Spotify version you're running on your device?

I'd also be helpful if you could mention any troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.

We'll be on the lookout for your replies.

“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”– Maria von Trapp

I'm having the exact same problem on my Windows 11 device.

I have Spotify open but not playing anything.

I'm on a Slack call for work with my headset connected.

I disconnect (turn off) my headset and Spotify just starts playing music.

This not an OS issue, this is a Spotify issue. When the Spotify app gets a notification from the OS to say that the audio device has changed, do nothing. That's all you need to do, just stop doing whatever you think you need to do, just stop.

If you must, just add a user configurable option to enable or disable automatic play.

No, restarting my OS will not fix this, re-installing and clearing cached values will not fix this. This is an easily reproducible bug that affects everybody.

Hey @JustACrumb,

Thanks for your reply and for all the info shared.

We'd suggest double-checking for possible new version updates in the three dot menu that you can find in the left-top of your screen in the desktop app. There, select Help> About Spotify. If there’s a new version available, you’ll see a button “restart to install”. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

If this behavior persists, it'd be great if you sent us a short video recording of what's happening, so we can better visualize what you're mentioning. You can attach the video in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and make it public, so we can watch it.

Lastly, would you mind sharing with us some more details about your headset? Like the make/model.

Keep us in the loop!

Hi @san9jay,

I also suffer from the issue, on Windows 11 and with a Bose SoundLink Mini. I can't reproduce with my bluetooth earbuds, so I'm inclined to think it's something specific to Bose bluetooth speakers.

To me the issue is most annoying because I listen to music while working, then pause it when I have a professional conf call, and after X minutes of inactivity, the Bose automatically turns off and Spotify starts blasting music through my laptop default speakers. Most annoying and makes one look unprofessional.

Dear @JohnnyLaFrite,

I dont think it is related specifically to Bose devices since many many users have reported the same issue. I feel it is the default behaviour of Spotify to restart playing on a bluetooth device when it connects. This maybe also related to the windows default device change notification. This maybe useful for example when connecting to a car music system but I cant understand why Spotify cannot add a simple option to disable this behavior. An option like "Do not autoplay when connecting to Bluetooth". There are so many reports of the issue and we keep getting pithy answers like try to update the Spotify version!
