My Question or Issue
After updating to the latest version of the Android app, playlists that are organized inside folders no longer appear in the add-to-playlist menu (the menu that appears when you tap ‘Add to other playlist’). At the top of the menu, it shows the playlists the song is in, but on Android, it no longer shows any playlist that is within a folder. These playlists do display correctly on desktop. If you search for a playlist that’s in a folder, though, it also does appear and correctly shows the tick symbol if the song is in the playlist.

Example: the song ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE by Bad Omens is in my playlists ‘alt-hardcore’ and ‘metalcore’, which are both inside folders. It’s also in ‘metal’, a playlist that’s not in a folder. If I open the add-to-playlist menu on the song, I only see the ‘metal’ playlist on mobile – but on desktop, I see all of them as expected.

I’ve verified that this behaviour across multiple songs. The issue consistently affects any playlist that is in a folder. If a playlist is in a folder, it does not appear in the mobile app when you’re in the add-to-playlist menu.

This only started happening after updating to the latest Spotify verison, the same update that fixed the add-to-playlist search field not working. While that has been fixed, this new issue has appeared that wasn’t there before.

I’ve tried clearing the cache and rebooting my phone but to no avail.

Yes i see that using the back button, saves, however its not really great and intuitive.. so about a month or so ago, when they changed it, it was suppose to be replaced by the fan, to close the playlistwindow, with a thumbslide, but vecauwe it was small you could easy just swipe alle spotify down instead, besides it not working all the time. Then a massive tread was made with 7 pages of userfeedback, and finally the ui changes was reverted or atleast the “save” button was restored. But only for 3 days, and after several post from me atleast, the mods simply not responding anymore. Its very annoying and i think this auto repli of try to reinstall, when someone actually comes by is just rubbing salt into the wound.. thx for pointing to the “go back” to save songs added. Its working, but it seems like a workaround, rather then good ui for me.

My Question or Issue

When I am listening to a song, and want to add it to one or more playlists, I hit (+) Add to Another Playlist.

Previously, for obvious reasons, all the playlists the song already belongs to would be listed at the top, even if they're inside a playlist folder.

Now, they are not shown. If the playlists it already is on are in folders, then they simply aren't shown. Which means I have to search through my folders to find what lists it's on, in case that might affect my decision. And since I often have folders in folders in folders, this is pretty much useless.

Is this a widespread bug?

Or worse, is it another "Feature" where they unnovate by taking away functionality that already existed?

I have the exact same issue. I was very reliant on that feature and now it seems to be gone. Infuriating.

I am having this issue on Android and it is infuriating. I have folders in folders. I love creating a ton of specific playlists. Not knowing what playlists a song is already in completely breaks how I use the app.

Also a side note on the save button being gone, I have to back out of like 3 or 4 nested folders to "save" which is also infuriating.

@Yordan Could this be bumped to ongoing issues?

Better check it twice if you're adding to multiple playlists. It often doesn't work, which is why there is a 6-page issue topic about this.

It’s been ten days and two Spotify updates – this issue still hasn’t been fixed. Even ignoring this issue, the updated save-to-playlist UI (expandable, no save button, having to press the back button multiple times if you open folders) is extremely frustrating to use.

I’m hoping this UI is fully reverted, as many others are too. At the very least, I hope this bug with folder playlists being hidden on Android is resolved, as managing my music on mobile has become practically impossible, since I can’t see what playlists my songs are in.

When tapping the green checkmark, I could see all the playlists the song has been added to. Now I can't see the playlists that I placed in a folder. Only when I navigate to the folder, the playlists are visible. Of course the solution when I could immediately see all the playlists regardless whether they're in a folder or not was much better as it provided an instant overview. Please fix this bug ASAP!

Example: the song in the screenshot is added to to 3 playlist, however only one is visible (screen 1). Only after I navigate to the appropriate folder (provided I remember that the song has been added to more than one playlist and which folder(s) these additional playlists might be in), I can see the additional playlists in folder Various (screen 2).

@Yordan anything? It's been over 10 days and 2 Spotify updates, with no change 😕

I have one song that's in 11 playlists. I have 300+ playlists.

That's because I make a playlist every month of all new to me or new songs. I've been doing this consistently since 2018. Then I have a "best of" and then various variations of those. Then remixes of older years I don't listen to as much. I NEED to know if I already found a song or not.

Then I have holiday playlist. Multiple Halloween ones. Playlists by genre. Playlists by emotion. Playlists inspired by specific family members.

Being able to tell the difference is crucial to my experience and could cause me to look for alternatives. I like Spotify. But between this and the AI issue, it's losing quality. I saw this is marked as a solution but we've yet to see one. I just need to know if this is truly a glitch or a design choice. Same for the new menu for adding songs, which has been mentioned by others here.

I can be patient. I just need to know there's a solution being made.

Hey folks,

No updates at this time, but rest assured this remains on our tech team's radar and is being looked into. We'll keep you posted as soon as we have any news to share, stay tuned!

After the update today, playlists in which the song has already been added are now displayed above folders...BUT NOW...folders that are INSIDE other folders are displaying ABOVE all the base folders. Folders inside folders SHOULDN'T be displayed unless the parent folder has been selected. This is crazy.

Thanks for updating us. A lot of people are having this issue. I’m not sure whether it only affects Spotify on Android, but I’d assume so as it hasn’t been fixed yet.

Could this please be bumped into ‘Ongoing Issues’?

I’ve been constantly checking for updates for 17 days now. Managing my music on mobile has become impossible. I do appreciate that the add-to-playlist menu is now fully extended without needing to swipe, so I hope that is kept forever.

I just updated the app – to version 9.1.2.1253 – and the issue has, finally, been fixed. Thank you, Spotify tech team! 🩷

Now, I hope that you don’t mess much more with the add-to-playlist UI (and ideally revert it to how it was before, with a save button).

Make sure to pin your parent folders!

Let me also say, to Spotify this time:

Yes, playlists inside folders ARE back to showing under Saved in! That's a big win!

However, could we also get the Save and Clear all buttons back? Without those, we still have to go into each folder and fully back out before being able to save & close.

Please 🙏

Spotify only lets you pin 4 items max, I feel like that's not a good solution. Parent folders should be the only ones displayed until you enter one of the folders, THEN it should display the folders inside the folder you entered. This is super basic folder functionality, Spotify needs to get this right.

I didn't say it was a solution — only a "band-aid" until this is fixed.

However, could we also get the Save and Clear all buttons back?

What if...stay with me here...it's that the corporate sociopaths want to DISCOURAGE us from making a lot of playlists, and adding songs to many of them?

"No", you say, "the managerial class cares deeply about our real user experience, and work hard to support how we want to do things, understanding that their compute is just the cost of providing good service! Like how when they realize that some of us add hundreds, or thousands, of songs to a playlist they intentionally take away features that help us manage big lists, like some kinds of sorting and searches and...oh! You're right!"

Exactly.

I see, the Saved In is working now...but are you saying it only works if the folders are pinned?

Nah, Saved in works independently of folders.

My suggestion to pin surface-level folders was for organizational purposes: to keep them above this folder mess.

  • Now, this only works for up to 4 top folders.. 😬

*This update does make playlist management faster, since you can access any playlist with 1 folder tap... it just creates a visual clutter.

  • I'd much prefer only seeing the top folders again.
