Now Playing bar missing on Android

I am having a problem when listening to Spotify on my phone: quite often the app seems to lock up and I cannot pause or stop playing the content, even if I get a call. I have to restart my phone to get the Spotify content to stop playing! The normal pause/rewind buttons don't appear when this happens, like it's stuck on Play. Have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet, was hoping there was a software fix? It's a pain!
