Remote Spotify on Locked Android devices

Greetings, I've been looking into this for a while and not really come to any answers. Is there any way I can play Spotify on my Android device, from my desktop-client, without actually having to unlock the phone and open Spotify on it? This kind of takes away some of the purpose of having this function in the first place. Thanks!

This used to work. I just recently upgraded to the latest Spotify app version and it seems not working anymore.

I have an old Samsung Android device with 4.2.2 installed.

Spotify was always running in the background and I was able to select it as playable device from any other device with and installed Spotify version. 

What happened here?
