Stream or playback downloaded songs?

If I do play songs which I have downloaded before: are they played from storage or does Spotify stream them over active internet connection? My hope is that I do not need to use offline mode but that Spotify consums no data when playing songs which are in my storage. thx for clarification

Spotify will play downloaded music rather than stream but some data will still be used, depending on how you use the app to display data which isn't available offline such as browsing playlists and so on. The safest option is to enable offline mode in spotify settngs.
