Unable to Pause/Play using car controls

I have a 2016 Nissan Maxima, a Samsung Galaxy S8 and Spotify Premium.

When I connect the phone to the car via Bluetooth and use Spotify, the Play/Pause button on my car does not work.  Other controls (Back, next, Random, Repeat) work as they should.  The Play/Pause button works for other media apps - Spotify is the only App that has this issue.

Audio plays fine, and Spotify is otherwise functional.  It's just kind of annoying to have to dig my phone out and unlock it everytime i need to play or pause.

Any ideas on what the problem could be, or if there is a fix?
