play/pause feature not responding at times

so if I'm in the spotify app no problem. if I'm not, either different app or screen off google assistant says asking spotify to play song...nothing happens...also my headphones will not resume the song but will pause it. However if I double click the headphone button to switch to the next song it will go to the next song and start playing regardless of what I'm doing... I've checked permissions and all apps should be working. wth is going on =(.
