About continuous playback on Spotify

Hello,

I observe that many profiles are continuously playing their lists 24 hours a day (I can see it in my friends list, to the right of the Spotify web player). Is this for any special reason? Does it serve to gain followers? It is a great doubt that I have.

One reason I can think of is attempting to up the number of plays for their favorite artists or songs.
