Hello, recently Spotify Car Thing will not respond to voice commands. When I say "hey Spotify" it shows that it is listening, then Immediately says something went wrong. I have tried all the trouble shooting steps and none have worked. Please help.
It really seems like an issue with the update and I'm assuming it would be fixed with the next app update. Ive also noticed that carthing will still do voice commands like next track and pause/play so it seems like it's having trouble communicating with the app
Really suspicious that the return policy is 14 days and the thing stopped working just 2 weeks after I received it.
For me it won't even do those. It'll display what I say then say it didn't understand. It worked for 2 weeks, then started having this problem. Conveniently right after the return window ended so I can't get my money back.
I looked into returning and it says they only allow it for 2 weeks after the purchase of the item. Conveniently mine stopped working just after those 2 weeks had passed.
Hey folks,
Thanks for getting in touch about this here in the Community.
We can confirm that the right teams are aware of this happening and they're currently looking into it. In the meantime, could you try the following?:
On another note, we'd like to know if "play", "pause", or "skip" commands result in the same error message as well. Also, sending us a screenshot of the error message or a video of the issue happening would come in handy. We'll pass this info on to the team to keep investigating.
We'll be on the lookout for your replies.
I too am having this issue on Spotify version 8.7.58.462 on my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G running Android 12.
I did a full clean install of the app where I cleared all of the data and cache before uninstalling.
There was a Spotify app update on 08/22/22 and I noticed the voice commands not working the following evening which leads me to believe it is an issue with the current Spotify version.
My carthing is running app version 0.36.38 and OS version 7.3.9
I also have an iPhone running the ios 16 beta which I connected to my carthing running Spotify version 8.7.56.464 and the voice commands worked with no hesitation.
My carthing accepts commands like next track and play/pause but will say "I didn't understand what you said, please try again" when using a command like "show artist" or anything that requires the carthing to communicate with the app.
Only "pause", or "skip" commands work on:
Android 12 Galaxy S22 Ultra
Spotify Version 8.7.58.459
Car Thing:
App Version 0.36.38
OS Version 7.3.9
All commands work ok on:
Android 10 Galaxy Note 9
Spotify Version 8.7.38.667
Car Thing:
App Version 0.36.38
OS Version 7.3.9
Clean install worked for me.
Clean reinstall did not work for me.
Only "pause", or "skip" commands work:
Android 12 Galaxy S22 Ultra
Spotify Version 8.7.58.459
Car Thing:
App Version 0.36.38
OS Version 7.3.9
Clean reinstall did not work for me.
Also, the new Spotify update didn't work.
Only "pause", or "skip" commands work:
Android 12 Galaxy S22 Ultra
Spotify Version 8.7.60.422
Car Thing:
App Version 0.36.38
OS Version 7.3.9

Hello Community,
I had the same issue last night. It got fixed by updating my Android Spotify app. My apps only update on Wi-Fi so make sure it is updated and try again.
Still not working for me. I uninstalled the Spotify app and did a clean reinstall. Google pixel phone. It is typing my request on the screen but then saying it did not understand what I said and tap to try again. Just received today. This is the first time I am setting it up.
I am having the same problem. Bought it about a month ago, worked for 2 weeks, and now it doesn't recognize any commands despite displaying the command on the screen. It doesn't even respond to the suggestions like "Hey Spotify, show recent songs" and stuff like that.
So I looked into it again, I believe the problem started after the 8/23/22 update.
I uninstalled and then reinstalled the App, and it still wasn't working.
THEN I went into the App on spotify and under "Settings" I went to "Car Thing" and set it up again. That fixed it and it now recognizes commands very well!
I had already setup the Car thing when I first got it, and strangely it still played my pre-sets, but it was no longer Set up. I think when the updates go through, the Car Thing resets and needs to be setup again. Kind of annoying and hopefully they fix that for future updates.
Same. Just got mine day before yesterday and it's easy to see why Spotify has fire sale on these things.
I worked for me...let's hope it holds for tomorrow.
Thanks
Same problem. Factory reset did not work and clean install did not work either. Got about a month ago. Hmmmmmmmm
Pixel 3a
I am also experiencing the same problem. I have double checked my connectivity, reset to factory the device, tried using it outside of my car, tried again in a quiet environment, no updates available, reset my own phone, and tried turning it on and off again but the issue is still there.
I just did a complete clean reinstall and it fixed the issue. Now I am not cussing at the Thing anymore.
