[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

Don't make me go back to Tidal!

What a scam. Ad free yeah right. I don't want to be a part of your monetization experiment.

EDIT

Seriously I listen to podcasts just like music, they cheapen the podcast experience just as they would the music experience. If your ad interrupts what I'm doing, I'll hate your product. Simple as that.

It seems there have been additional developments since the introduction of the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast to Spotify.

In the past few weeks, Spotify has added non-embedded ads to the JRE podcast; they appear as separate audio tracks, each ~30-90 seconds in length, and interrupt the Podcast shortly after the intro. While they are skippable by 15-second increments, they are still a slap in the face to Spotify's loyal Premium subscribers.

There is a screenshot below. This ad played 15 seconds into the JRE podcast.

This is unacceptable by Spotify and must be fixed. It's not difficult.

I hate getting ads when I paid to remove them. Get rid of ad insertion and fix your finances in a different way if you're not making enough money off content.

I listen to a lot of podcasts through the Apple platform and recently realized it would be smarter to switch over to Spotify since I pay for a premium subscription - Ad Free Listening, right?! Decided to do my research before making the switch and boy am I glad I found this thread. Why would anyone with a premium subscription listen to podcasts on this platform if it’s practically the same experience when you listen on free platforms that play ads. Get it together Spotify.

I know the answer they gave you is BS because I have been listening to Joe Rogan podcast for years. He has always been against and said he would never have ads during a podcast. He has always had the ads in the beginning making them easily skippable, however since moving to Spotify there are now ads in the middle of the podcast. Spotify quit lying and remove these ads for premium customers.

I've seen numerous spotify employees stating "some podcasters may choose to include third party ads in the podcasts apart from any paid promotions which they announce during the actual podcast" in response to premium user issues with mid roll ad reads. This messaging is deceptive and appears to me as nothing more than a gross attempt to shift blame from away from company policy (as described in the article linked above).

It seems like spotify had this idea that premium users would be okay with ads because the content the ads appear on are podcasts. Spotify's chief content officer (Dawn Ostroff) says "podcasts have been ad-supported across the industry" which seems to point towards the idea that premium users would be okay with ads because it's a podcast and podcasts are content that people expect to hear ads on. If I was listening to a podcast on a medium I don't PAY FOR, maybe I'd be okay with this logic. Unfortunately for spotify this is not the case.

I've been a satisfied spotify premium user for more than 2 years, mostly for music. If this is the direction spotify is deciding to go with their premium users, there is a one hundred percent chance they will lose my business and I'll stream music from a company that actually respects it's premium users instead of trying to suck more money out of them after marketing spotify premium as ad free. It is simply unacceptable.

I'm actually thinking shifting completely to Prime Music or Google Music because of this. Spotify becoming so greedy over the time and forgetting its own issues, customer obsession is gone out the window. I can't clear history of some shitty music I have listened to in the past and now these ads during podcasts, they run atleast for good 5-6 minutes before the podcast starts and I cant skip them at all. What's the use of paying premium if I can't even skip the ads and delete some of the history. I understand you train your ML models based on my past listening history, being a Data Analytics person myself, you still can run your model by removing segments of data, you dont need to have every single piece. Most of all, if a customer wants to delete their past data why are you not giving that ability to customers, this feels more like against GDPR compliance.

I'm fine with whatever I get from a normal podcast feed. I don't expect the same adds with more complication (locked into the initial loop of ads each time I click on a podcast or resume listening) or new ads that aren't part of the normal podcast.

What it looks like is that podcasts have special advertising situations and Spotify took advantage of that to add extra ads on top of things.

This is actually a very negative direction for podcasts when I'm outside with gloves on. I don't want to keep pulling my gloves off and the phone out of my pocket so I can fiddle with it.

I pay for premium and its looking like I need to find out where to pirate JRE so I can just listen to the podcast (with the normal up front ads it's had for the last 10 years) with other software that works.

If Spotify is trying build a platform to pull people in with podcasts, they're not going the right direction. The software needs to be as easy to use or better than all of the main podcast apps. Not worse

100%. Keep this **bleep** up and I swear to god I’ll transfer my playlists out and never see you again. Spotify sub for 5 years

Lack of ads is the main reason I went premium. Watch your user base disappear if you continue**bleep** and with it, Joe will go too

How many votes for this topic do we need before Spotify will even grace us with a single response, let alone join the conversation?

I’ve stopped listening to podcasts on Spotify altogether now and will not be sharing links to podcasts on Spotify to friends anymore. So far my experience with the Podcasts app and of course BBC Sounds is still not ruined like on Spotify. It will take a big effort from Spotify to remove all adverts entirely from podcasts for me to return to listening to any on their platform.

I am still considering moving my music subscription to another platform because this just shows what a bad direction Spotify have moved in. They may be looking after their shareholder’s short term interest but certainly not their long term interest by ruining their existing customer base and putting off new generations of customers.

We want ad free listening across the board and that is what we are prepared to pay for. Anything less is just not worth it.
