[Linux] Spotify 0.8.8 for GNU/Linux

Hi everybody!

Today we pushed the latest and greatest Spotify client to our repository. This time you're getting the good stuff first, this version has only been rolled out to a small percentage of Windows/Mac users. It contains some of the features that were presented on our recent press event, such as being able to follow artists and tastemakers. Have a look at the brand new Follow page, where you can find interesting artists and other people to follow. You'll get updates on their activity, such as newly released albums etc.

As for Linux-specific fixes, there are some minor bug fixes. The biggest change is the packaging. The client now is installed to /opt and it uses XDG mechanisms to register icons and menus. The executable is now also built without hardcoded paths to libraries. This means that the folder can be put anywhere and just run from there. Unfortunately, this release still depends on libssl0.9.8. We'll try to get rid of that in upcoming releases!

The new client is just a "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" away!

Try the following:

* Make sure an old spotify isn't running: killall spotify

* Check that you have spotify in /opt/spotify/spotify-client, and that /opt/spotify/spotify-client/Data/apps.zip exists

* Check that /usr/bin/spotify is symlinked to /opt/spotify/spotify-client/spotify

* Remove ~/.config/spotify and ~/.cache/spotify

* Check that you have a working internet connection

* Start spotify

I have created som installer scripts for us unhappy creatures using other distros than debian/ubuntu. Modeled after the classic configure/make download/make install pattern they can make a clean user install without root privileges or system-wide FHS-compliant installs splitted in data, 32-bit compiled stuff and 64-bit.

More info on github. Why don't you give it a try, perhaps just to make a user install? The design is platform-agnostic, but expect some patching before it works on other platforms (or even becams more stable on Fedora).

After I upgraded to 0.8.8, my client keeps hanging. Sometimes a couple minutes into the first track I play, sometimes after playing several tracks in a row. I experienced it with the previous versions as well, but not so frequent (and especially after resuming the computer from a suspended state). According to stdout, it's a dead lock:

Hey, thank you for that, but no joy.. 😕

All the stuff looked fine, deleted both folders and remove --purge && reinstalled but that didnt help either, kicked all mopidy related stuff (libspotify12 python-spotify mopidy) just to be sure but still the same.

Are there any debug flags I could set?

I'm using Spotify 0.8.8.323.gd143501 on Ubuntu 12.04. Where would the appropriate place be to leave feedback about the abrupt UI changes?

* The album view width is now so short I can't see enough of the track names to identify (especially classical titles).

* There's no longer any indication of what track is playing.

* In general, this update is a big step backward, usability-wise.

Same problem as spotifyradioapi here.

I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ( Linux xxxx 3.2.0-35-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 5 17:42:16 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

I can play songs, add playlists and so on... but radio, apps searcher, news, etc don't work.

If i launch spotify from terminal it throws some errors trying to access the zip files like the user spotifyradioapi. I can manually unzip  ...Data\apps.zip without problems so is not a permission denied problem or something like that.

UPDATE: if i use the i386 .deb package from http://repository.spotify.com/pool/non-free/s/spotify/ everything works... but can't exec the application from unity dash... etc.

Maybe there's a problem with the zipreader.cpp in x86_64 arch?

Especially the second point is quite annoying..

It's the new artist and album views (with the centered track display and truncated titles) that are confusing and useless.

When you do a search (e.g., "Steve Reich"), you now get a couple rows of thumbnails followed by the old-style wide list of results with resizable, sortable columns (this is the view that is most useful to me). Problem is, doing a search is the only way to get back to this view. As soon as you click on an album or artist, you get dumped into the new-style truncated views, with no indication of what track is playing and apparently no way of getting back to the search results view without running a search again.

But, again, this is obviously not the place to make UI complaints. Where then? Thanks.

I have a 64 bit install myself, so that's not the problem. Maybe there is a problem locating the zip file for some reason. Could you try running /opt/spotify/spotify-client/spotify directly instead of via the symlink in /usr/bin? If that doesn't work, try cd-ing to /opt/spotify/spotify-client first.

As for the ui issues, I'll make sure the right people sees your comments. Most of these are already being worked on...

I have changed to directory /opt/spotify/spotify-client/ and done ./spotify and i have the same error... (zip can't locate file in archive).

I have upgraded 12.04 to 12.10, removed cache and uninstalled with --purge, installed again and still does not work with the same errors.

I have installed spotify on a brand new vm installation of Ubuntu 12.10 (x86_64) and it works without problems...

I know there's something wrong in my Ubuntu installation but what could be? Could i try something else?

When you have spotify started, could you run lsof -p `pidof spotify` and send me the output as a private message?

On my system (Arch Linux x64 with dwm window manager) the search window stays black and the ad on the right constantly flickers at about 10Hz... Very annoying.
