[Linux] Spotify 0.8.8 for GNU/Linux

Solved!

[Linux] Spotify 0.8.8 for GNU/Linux

Update: Spotify for Linux v0.9.4 is now available. See here.

Hi everybody!

Today we pushed the latest and greatest Spotify client to our repository. This time you're getting the good stuff first, this version has only been rolled out to a small percentage of Windows/Mac users. It contains some of the features that were presented on our recent press event, such as being able to follow artists and tastemakers. Have a look at the brand new Follow page, where you can find interesting artists and other people to follow. You'll get updates on their activity, such as newly released albums etc.

As for Linux-specific fixes, there are some minor bug fixes. The biggest change is the packaging. The client now is installed to /opt and it uses XDG mechanisms to register icons and menus. The executable is now also built without hardcoded paths to libraries. This means that the folder can be put anywhere and just run from there. Unfortunately, this release still depends on libssl0.9.8. We'll try to get rid of that in upcoming releases!

The new client is just a "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" away!

What, you don't already have Spotify installed? Lookie here: http://www.spotify.com/download/previews/

Don't use Debian? Check out these zip packages:

We're really off-topic here... once you know how/if it worked, could you post a reply here (yes, I'm intterested 🙂 )

Thank you for keeping up the work on linux version.

I installed it easily an a few Mageia systems now, using the installer at https://github.com/leamas/spotify-make

(thank you leamas!)

Thanks for feedback! Would be extremely glad if you could bring this message also to this thread (perhaps even a kudos?) to breathe some life into it.

Last spotify client version (0.8.8.323) on ubuntu 12.04 not working. Im trying to install a previous version (0.8.4) but it is not in the repos; even I tried from a terminal using "sudo spotify --offline" as I read in forums but nothing is working. Any idea?

How much does it not work?

Do it start at all?

Show login dialog?

Do you get any output in terminal when starting from terminal?

You couls try using the installer and instructions at https://github.com/leamas/spotify-make

Worked nice for me on mageia and i see it is supposed to work on at least fedora and ubuntu too

Login dialog open just one second and then close. Impossible to login.

From terminal I get this:

@ubdesk-12:~$ spotify
Cannot connect to server socket err = No existe el archivo o el directorio
Cannot connect to server socket
jack server is not running or cannot be started

I will try make from github. <Thanks

Same problems with 0.8.8 and ubuntu 12.04. after a lot of hours browsing forums I've got the solution thanks to leamas

I've just removed .cache/spotify/ folder and the problem to login disapeared.

Thanks!! 🙂

Hi! Thank you for awesome player to the linux! Just published it! The Spotify working soo nice on Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04. Speak to the Canonical and make it to the all Ubuntu users! Everyone can not use terminal or afraid to do so, so it's must be very easy to install! Other linux distros can make that repository adding thing and they already have been added it by default (exampple Mint)

Or make that repository adding to the .deb 😉

You are the best and thank you for supportin so nice OS like Linux is!

Hey, how can I see the followers list of one of my playlists? I can see the number, but if I click over it nothing happens. Thanks!!

PS: Keep working on Spotify for Linux, please!! I'm very grateful for it!

I've got the drag, drop and crash bug as well. Running ubuntu 11.10

Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. Using the 0.8.8 Spotify I can not add songs to play lists. Right click brings up "add too" but no playlists pop up to add to . Drag and drop causes a crash.

For a while there was a browser based version of Spotify, I would be happy to use that as an alternative to the Linux client. Is that still around? Or is there any work round for the adding to playlist problem with the native Linux client? This is a major loss of functionality.

Slightly off topic but why are some of the pages white with hard to read text, when others are the older better UI of grey background and easy to read white text?

All the best and thanks for your efforts.

I've got the drag'n'drop bug  and the invertet-playlist-mosaic-bug, too.

Hi there thanks for your efforts. You mention that right click is a work around for the drag and drop bug, but for me right click "add to" for me results in no playlists appearing. I have no way of adding to playlists. I have posted at the end about this, but just seen your comments. Any thoughts? Thanks for the native client.

All the best

HP 6530b -> Ubuntu 12.10 amd64 -> Spotify 0.8.8

Bugs:

1. Tried to drag a song from "Artist Top Tracks" to a playlist. The whole client freezed and force closed

2. When dragging songs in Spotify, if Unity taskbar is hidden, the taskbar slides up, and covers the area where my playlists are located. Really annoying. Yes, it's a feature in Ubuntu, but it should be possible to turn it off.

3. When i open spotify from shortcut in Unity taskbar, Spotify creates one more icon. There is two spotify icons in the unity taskbar until i close Spotify. Sometimes the other icon don't display the Spotify logo, but a questions mark ("?"). Getting two icons when opening Spotify from shortcut in Unity browser, happens 80% of the times.

4. Soundquality is terrible in Spotify Linux version. I tested a song in deadbeef in comparison to spotify 320kbps version. Spotify ads sparkling and distortion, very noticable in bass, cymbals, drums and other sharp sounds. It's really annoying, and it's easy to hear if you got the files yourselves for comparison. Playing local files through spotify adds the same bad effect. So, something in Spotify's audio engine is terrible wrong. I have a HRT Music Streamer II dac, same results there. Got Windows on the same computer, sound is good in Windows version.

Problem 3:

(To my defense, i knew how to take print screens, I'd just forgot how easy Ubuntu could save them as PNG (Just reagular print screen..) :P)

So many Fedora users, so many requests, why not just make an official repository for Fedora?

This version has so many annoying features and bugs that I've resorted to running spotify in a Win 7 VM that's still running 0.8.5. This is clearly not ideal and I'm now actively searching for viable alternatives to spotify. Life would be so much simpler if I could have a previous version of spotify somewhere so I could just keep running that. I don't care about the shiny new features. I just want my music and playlists. I don't want to be social. I just want to listen to the music I chose when I'm working.

Not that much to ask when I'm paying for it every month. Could I please have a working and non-irritating spotify client back please?

You can just download a version you want and install it. What operating system you have?

I agree that this version is buggy and annoying. I run Ubuntu, and it would be nice if the last two versions was available in the repository.

So far I have experienced the following with 0.8.8:

- It crashes when trying to add to playlists

- It doesn't show a playing icon at the track currently playing on the new artist pages.

- It doesn't remember playback state from artist pages after closing. When ropening, you can continue playing the track you were at when you closed, but it doesn't continue to the next track.

- It still doesn't react to media buttons.

I feel about the same, although it is "only" the drag to palylist that annoys here on Mageia. (right click works)

I pnder on using clementine to play everything including spotify by a plugin, but for that i need to upgrade to premium account.  Not sure i want to upgrade just because of a bug, but on the other hand i can then download and all family listen to the music then.

An alternative is using wine.  Had it working a couple years ago, have not tried now.

works like crap with xfce4,

why cant you release some code so we can fix the issues you cant?

im no sheep, im gonna say what i think.
