Try to put some music on with phone and then open it. But works for me now. Maybe it is fixed... Atleast for 22.04

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.  Latest Spotify app installed as .deb.    The strange thing is that I updated to this version yesterday.  When I started it, it used firefox to login and the ran fine.  I shut the machine down for the night, and now when I try to start it it just opens a window with a black screen.

Would be nice if it presented some relevant error dialog instead of just locking up. 😕

Tried examine logging output of which there is a lot, but couldn't find anything apparent.

I used to have 1.1.55 running fine, but when this was killed I ran the web player for a while which sucked badly so I took the plunge hoping that it would be better but to no avail...

$ spotify --version
Spotify version 1.2.11.916.geb595a67, Copyright (c) 2023, Spotify Ltd

Could it be something with the weird login procedure? Why would the app need to call up the user selected system browser to do the login? That could fail spectacularly depending on which browser the user prefers. Better to use the actual Chrome browser that is embedded the app. The whole thing seems rather contrived to me, but feel free to explain the reasoning.

I can get it running once by killing the entries autologin.saved_credentials and autologin.blob in ~/.config/spotify/prefs.

Then it lets me login via the browser and the app starts.  When I stop the app, those entries are written again and on the next start it is all black again.

fscked up login procedure in the client, bug confirmed!

Please fix the client and push an updated .deb to the repo ASAP.

This bug is extremely annoying, having to edit the .config/spotify/prefs file manually everytime I want to start spotify.  I don't think that's a good UX.

Could anyone please look at it at least instead of just ignoring it.

what is happening at spotify?    is the company about to fold?

Nobody else finds this config editing and re-logging in tedious?

hello?

yo, this is beyond ridiculous...

still broken.   apparently no reaction here or at the support mail address.  Maybe you have shut down for the summer, but this is a paid service so I think at least a reply would be in order.   disappointed...

sigh...

bump 😞

Works for me now.

what do you mean phone?  You mean having something playing on your phone, then opening spotify on your linux box?   That's a pretty strange workaround and doesn't seem to work here on 20.04 at least.  It's always all black and locked on the second start up after logging in.   Removing the credentials from the prefs file always works in the sense that it lets me do the login all over and run one session.
