My Question or Issue
Spotify application is not playing - it is connected to the internet and I can browse content etc.
When I click play on something, the only thing that happens is a black, blank sidebar pops up on the right hand side. The play / back / forward toolbar at the bottom of the screen is greyed out, and the play icon remains there - nothing starts and it doesn't change to the pause icon. I am able to play through a web browser fine so is not an internet issue.
I tried restarting the app, and then deleting and reinstalling the latest version but it is the same.
I assume this is related to a Sonoma 14.1 update.
*Update - just upgraded to Sonoma 14.2, issue still remains as described.*
*Update 2 - issue seems to have resolved overnight - now able to play on desktop app :)*

Hey folks!
We made some changes backstage and wanted to confirm with you if the issue still persists on your end.
If it does, try removing your cached data and check again. We'll be on the lookout 🙂

My Question or Issue
This morning, my desktop Spotify app stopped me from being able to play songs at all. Initially, it was only selected songs, that quickly became all songs. There is no error message, just has the playback bar greyed out.
It was working fine all this week with no issues. I had not installed anything new or changed the configuration overnight.
I have tried a clean reinstall of Spotify, but that has not resolved the problem. The app has access allowed through my computer firewall.
The web player works fine through Google Chrome on the same device, as well as on my Android phone.
I just posted a similar issue - https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Mac/Spotify-app-not-playing-on-Sonoma-14-1/td-p/5751684
Do you get the black sidebar popping up when you try to play something?
I'm experiencing this exact issue also.
OS: 12.7.1 Monterey - Late 2015 iMac
Was working fine yesterday. Besides this issue, nothing's changed on my computer.
No, nothing happens at all and the now-playing icon is greyed out as well.
Interestingly, I can play tracks from the app by connecting to an external speaker (through Spotify, not independently through Bluetooth), but just not from "This computer".
Good point - I just played something in Chrome instead of an external speaker, and it appears I can control playback in the app too, but only when it is on 'Listening on Web Player (Chrome)' under 'Connect to a device'.
As soon as I close Spotify in the Chrome web browser the music stops, and the application instantly reverts back to the greyed out toolbar.
I've also tried playing it from my Windows computer and this seems fine as well.
Only my Mac seems to be having the issues. I noticed that the app has become quite slow to load on Mac in the last month as well.
Exact same thing is happening to me 😕
Same thing happening to me just now, the app is not playing music, clicking on play/song doesn't do anything. The play back tool bar is greyed out. I can play music from the Mac app to my Sonos though.
I've uninstalled and followed the advice, but nothing has worked.
MacOS Ventura 13.5.1
The Spotify Desktop Mac App is not playing music at all - this has happened earlier today. Clicking play on a song does not nothing at all, the playback toolbar at the bottom is grayed out.
I have followed all the advice about uninstalling etc
Everything else is visible, folders, playlists, graphics etc
Using the browser version works.
Using the app and connecting to my Sonos works.
I only ever use the app though.

Exact same problem here.
same thing over here!
Same issue here, although podcasts play fine......... Playing fine on mobile.
Same here,
I have exactly the same issue but I'm on the Mac using Ventura. Was fine yesterday but today refuses to play at all. The play back bar is greyed out for me. Music plays fine through Safari though. I too have cleared cache, uninstalled & downloaded a new version. Same issue.
Seems like playback has come back for me now, not sure about anyone else, but no word from my support request to Spotify for what this issue is/was.
In past few days Spotify on my iMac Mini will not play music. It will play podcasts.
I have binned the app and downloaded a fresh version. I have cleared the cache.
When I click on a music track there is no response. When I click on a podcast it works perfectly
I have Spotify on my iphone and it plays music and podcasts.
When I click the connect to device icon pin the computer screen it will play on the iPhone but not on “this computer” but I can select the track via the computer.
When it is playing on the iPhone if I click the connect to computer it will not connect to it.
Can you please Help?
Same here, it is working today all of a sudden!
Hey there folks,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention on the Community.
We can see that some of you are mentioning that you're back on track and that things are working again, that's great news!
Should you still be experiencing issues, however, could you let us know what Spotify version you're currently running so we can look into this further? Feel free to include a video or photo showing how things look from your end as well. If the files are too large to attach here in the Community, you can send them to us via Google Drive or as unlisted YouTube videos.
Cheers!
