what does this mean? or is it a bug where the playlist name doesn't display?

Welcome to the Community and thanks for reaching out!

Does this occur only with this one user you're following or with everyone in your Friend Activity? Based on the screenshot you've attached, the user is listening to a playlist. I suspect that it was just named that way and it's difficult to click on. It's worth checking with them to be sure though.

only this user. and yes it appears to be a playlist, but how could it have been named this way? as i've tried to have a blank named playlist before but it wasn't possible.

Hi again @geenkoekjes!

The thing is that the Space bar on the keyboard doesn't count as a character, but you can just google the Unicode blank character and copy it, then paste it in the "Name" field of your playlist.
