My Question or Issue
I saw a post from 2012 or so about duplicate songs in playlists and I saw that a mechanism was implemented so that a popup would appear if you tried to add a song already in a playlist. I actually remember that and loved having that option. For some reason, it no longer comes up and now I find myself with duplicates on my playlists (which are too large to manually edit). Could we bring that back? It was awesome.

Hey there @tanarulstar,
Thanks for searching for the answer you need here!
The feature you're describing is currently available for the Spotify desktop app and you're expected to see a pop-up window warning you of a duplicate song once you try adding the track to a playlist.
In case this doesn't occur on your desktop app we suggest getting the latest app version with all its features updated. The best way to do this is by performing a clean reinstall of the app on your PC. Check out this help page in order to find the steps for clean reinstall depending on the device in use. Once you’ve performed the clean reinstall you'll need to re-download your offline music and podcasts.
If the clean reinstall doesn't do the trick for you, it's also a good idea to log in to your Spotify account on another device just to check if you observe the same. If it doesn't occur on a different device, we'd suggest making sure that your original device is up to speed with any software updates available.
Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

I'm having the same issue: there's no more popup warning when adding a song that's already in the playlist. Quite annoying. 😞 I'm using the Mac client, updated to the latest version 10 minutes ago. Thanks.
Issue is still there in 2021. Did a clean install but both my Windows and Apple Spotify applications do not show a pop-up and I'm able to add the same song to a playlist multiple times over.
Hey there @sjh46,
Welcome to the Community and thanks for reaching out about this.
Just to confirm, is this happening on all your devices? If so, would you mind asking a friend or a relative to log in to their account in your devices to check if the issue persists with a different account?
On another note, could you let us know if this is happening with every song or only with a specific one? If the issue happens with only a specific song, could you send us its Spotify URI? To get it, open the Spotify desktop app > click the three dots next to the content > Share > Copy Spotify URI.
Make sure to check if the URI is the same of the song you already have in your playlist as the one you want to add. If it isn't, could you send us the URIs of both?
We'll be on the lookout for your reply 🙂
Hey @sjh46,
Thanks for getting back to us and going through this troubleshooting.
If this feature seems to work on other accounts used on your phone, there might be an issue with you particular account. However, we can't see what is actually going on with your account from our end.
Sometimes accounts get broken and some features don't work as expected. In this case you could try creating a new free account and check if everything is fine on that one. You can consider moving your Music library over to the new account, following the steps described here.
Hope you find this info helpful.
Hey @alex and @eni,
I think I've found the issue, at least on my end this happens. For a long time now, I'm used to dragging a song I like directly into the playlist itself. I do this because I like the newly added songs to be added on the top of the list and I don't think there's another way to do so (besides changes the order later, when the song is already added to the list). Well, if I drag a duplicate song into the same playlist, using the list on the left side of the screen, or, use the right click menu to add a song, the duplicate message appears on desktop! Strange huh?
Maybe the developers can have a look at this? I think I'm not the only one having this issue. I'm sure this function has worked before so it could be a little bug that has nothing to do with individual accounts. Let me know if there's an update!
Hey @sjh46,
Thanks for getting back to us.
We really value your feedback as it helps inform our decisions going forward, and we'll be sure to pass this on to the right folks here at Spotify.
If anything else comes up, you know where to find us.
Have a good one 🙂
Can you please explain to me why adding duplicate songs to a playlist is a "feature"? Who in the world wants duplicate songs their playlists!? Please give us a tool to clean up all duplicates in our playlist. Here I'll write the code for you
usersPlaylist = usersPlaylist.Distinct();
Jesus is it that hard?
