I too am playing lossless m4a files in Spotify. This used to work while having QuickTime installed but stopped working maybe early 2015. It now works again. Perhaps it's due to the Windows 10 upgrade?

Well,

I was a little fast on my opinion. SPotify seems to accept Some Flac, but not all of them.
I try to add my Beatles albums, and, well, it is not working at all. Sadness 😞 :'( :'(

I think it doesn't work for 24-bit FLAC.

Is it a new feature ?

@JulienPr

How did you manage to do this?

I just got reply for .flac implementing into Spotify and it looks it won't be able in nearest future:

Hello again Marius,

Thanks for staying in touch, looks like i missed this question while reading through our previous contacts, let's see if there is anything planned as of now 🙂

Unfortunately there is right now no plans to include loss-less streaming, considering this is still mainly a streaming service, going higher than 320 kb/s would put heavy strain on both song servers and the 3G network. However the idea would be appealing to sound enthusiasts. I would guess a higher bandwidth option could become an option in the future when higher bandwidth hopefully is more globally accessible.

FLAC quality will most likely never be an option, but an option higher than 320 should enter the market sooner or later 🙂 But these are simply guesses, nothing can be confirmed as of now.

Anything else you have questions about? 🙂

Have a nice day and best regards,

Felix

@Geographyl , I don't know what you wrote for them, but he seems to confuse flac streaming and flac being playable at the app and pc program through local files. 😕

Stop deciding that I don't want to pay for bandwith! I am a MUSIC LOVER and you are nobody with no right telling me I can't hear the difference between FLAC and 320. I know what I hear, you just have average hearing or inferior equipment if you can't tell. I've listened to music on extremely low volumes all my life and haven't partied much and always used hearing protection. It has been frustrating me for years that everyone is saying there is no difference. I hear electronic devices hissing and squeeking everywhere I go that most people don't, am always the first to notice someone arriving at home etc.

If the only reason Spotify thinks I don't want to listen to FLAC is because of bandwith costs, then I'll happily pay higher subscription costs to allow this. Have some respect, you are in a position to improve the world a little here Spotify! Music brings joy to many and some of your customers have payed thousands of dollars for their audio equipment only to get told by their $10/month subscription that their bandwith is too expensive for better quality music... If you want to be really nitty about it you could at least offer the option for the offline synchronized files to be downloaded in lossless format while keeping the streams in 320, so that users can "manualy upgrade" the quality of their favorite songs while not burning bandwith while exploring.

Hi Spotify,

Here is yet another vote for flac music files! Not for streaming per se but rather for offline downloads would be great!

Is there by the way any news that this is coming soon?

I'm currently auditioning the French Qobuz platform, as it streams in lossless FLAC. The deciding factor will be the depth of their library.

Sorry, but repekt at first my wish, because I am her the cusromer. 320k is for me to low. Accept it or let it be!

Pausing my premium until local flax playability being addressed.
Too sad but time to move on 😞

Hi all,

Just want to add my support for streaming Flac.  I recently tried Tidal, and would have cancelled my Spotify if it was not for Spotify Connect working so well, and Tidal, via DNLA with Bubble PNP being a real pain to use.

I appreciate this is moot for mobile users generally, but Spotify is my music of choice in the home and I just wish I could get the full timbre reproduced.  Would be willing to pay for the extra quality - Tidal was double the cost of Spotify Premium.

Cheers

McT

I left paid Spotify subscritpion quite some time ago. FLAC would go far to entice me back. For the past 14 mnths I've used Deezer Elite which even my girfriend (who is FAR from a music buff or audiophile and put up with me RE-digitizing a lot of her 128mbps  MP3 collection to 320).. even she has said on a number of occasions things like "That sounds amazing." or "This is streaming?"
Anyone who doesn't believe you can hear a difference has not listened to something like Jeff Buckley's "Grace" album on Spotify and then Deezer Elite (or Tidal etc) back to back. The former sounds really decent, while the latter always gives me chills. It's a vicseral reaction to some recordings, not something you can always point to specificially (though often you can with high-hats and cymbals etc).
There IS a difference.

+1 for FLAC support.  WIll eventually leave Spotify when either Tidal has CarPlay support or Apple Music gets it (supposedly this year) and also gets their s**t together otherwise.

I thought deezer elite was only on sonos?

Looking at deezer and tidal as an alternative to my long subscription with spotify now.

I too would like flac format. Main use is at home with dedicated DAC and headphone amp.

Flac +1 i would happily pay a premium for flac sound Quality!
