My Question or Issue

So, I've been a Spotify premium user for years and I'm very happy with the service and quality. The past week I've been looking at buying new headphones (my QC35's are falling apart) and while doing that I just happened to open an old mp3 that I had on my computer. I was amazed at how good it sounded when compared to listening to the same track on Spotify using my old headphones.

None of the below information is required. However, the more you provide the easier it will be for us to try and help. After trying various combinations of players, source and headphones (iPhone Xs Max, Sony Xperia XZ1, my home built computer playing Spotify, mp3 and (on iPhone) Apple Music) I have found that the soundstage sounds wider and clearer using mp3 compared to Spotify (downloaded and highest quality) on my phones, but there is little to no difference when playing on my computer. I've also concluded that playing mp3 on my computer and on my phones sounds about the same as well.

The impression I get is that the music is somehow "compressed" on mobile. The soundstage is pushed towards the center which also seem to impact the clarity in particularly the mid-range. I am NOT an audiophile and I don't really know what I'm talking about, I'm just trying to convey what I hear.

So. My question is this: Is there a difference in how music is projected in Spotify when played on mobile devices as opposed to desktop? And if so, is there anyway to turn it off? Admittedly, I've never heard this before, but now that I have, I can't help but think about it.

Thank you.
