Mute Spotify when using Skype

Mute Spotify when using Skype

I am a Windows 10 user and use Skype on my Desktop with a headset.  I like to listen music via Spotify when working but want it muted while I make a call.   I have tried the audio settings in Windows Settings but cannot find one that addresses this issue.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thank you.

Hi @louis30092,

Thanks for reaching out about this in the Community!

There is no option in the settings of the Spotify app which will allow you to manage the sound priority of the app from inside the platform.

You can try the following:

1. Om Windows 10, locate and right-click on the Sound icon in the taskbar (represented by a Speaker icon).

2. Click on Sound Settings in the resulting context menu and then find Sound Control Panel.

3. Open it and navigate to the Communications tab.

4. Under "When Windows detects communications activity", you will find the options Windows has to offer for when it detects communications activity such as a Skype call. When Windows detects communications activity on a computer, it can either mute all other sounds, reduce all other sounds on the computer by 80%, reduce all other sounds by 50% or do nothing at all. These are the only four options Windows has to offer and there is no functionality to create your own, customized option. Select "Mute all other sound" by clicking on the radio button located directly next to it.

5. Click on Apply and then on OK.

6. Restart your computer.

Let us know if that helped 🙂

Thank you for taking the time with this issue.
While that makes sense, unfortunately, I tried it and it does not work.
Tried both Spotify web play and Spotify Windows app.

Hi @louis30092,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Sorry to hear that altering the sound settings doesn't seem to do the trick.

This is the only way that we know of managing which app has control over the sound output when a call comes in. There is no way to change that from the Spotify app itself.

We'd recommend reaching out to the Support team from Skype as they might know of some settings configuration in Windows or in Skype itself which is controlling this.

Keep us posted on how you get on with this.

Hi @Alex what about going to the huge beta thread and answering some stuff there?
