Spotify stops after each local song

Solved!

Spotify stops after each local song

Hello,

I've got a problem with playing local files in spotify. After each song it stops playing. This weirdly enough is only the case for local songs and not for steamed songs.
I think it might have something to do with a windows update. When I found out, two days ago, I recovered my system to the state before the windows update, and then it worked again. Last night it automatically updated windows and same problem of not continuous playing occured again.

Someone with a solution? It is really annoying!

Cheers!

Ohe I don't think you have the same issue... The issue we are have is spotify is not playing the next local mp3 automatically Every single time. Sounds like you have a type of codec/drm issue. I'm guessing installing/reinstalling QuickTime would help you out

IMO, This issue definitely has something to do with M4A files.  I have an album of local M4A files and the whole album plays fine without stops.  As soon as it moves on from that album to the next album with is MP3, it won't play.  Just does that stuck thing everyone here is familiar with, where you need to get it to play another song, and then come back to the song you want.

If I go from the last song of an MP3 album and the next album is in M4A format, it will play the next song fine.  M4A files work, MP3's don't.

Also, going from an M4A song into MP3 song, the song plays, but no further MP3 songs will.  Just the first.  Again this all comes down to M4A files.

If I convert an MP3 file into an M4A file, it will then work completely.  If I were to convert an entire album of MP3 files to M4A the entire album plays continuously and doesnt' stop.

The mysterious part is as follows: If I convert an entire album of MP3s to M4A's, and delete all the old MP3's, spotify somehow automatically knows and subsitites the M4A's in it's local library without you telling it anything. Typically I'd expect you to have to re-import the new M4A files, but you don't!!! It just works!  It's like it's expecting M4A, and that's the reason it doesn't play the next song of an MP3 album is cause it's looking for an M4A file.....  This is just my theory atm.... I've been desperate to get this stupid issue fixed for months.

I hope this mess is clear to someone, maybe I'm the only one experiencing this particular bug, I don't know.  Basically the solution to my problem is to convert my entire library of MP3 based songs into M4A's.   The existing M4A albums I have work flawlessly.

If you decide to do this make sure you keep a copy of your mp3s. Transcoding in lossy formats (mp3, m4a etc) is decreasing quality. Compression artifacts are cumulative, so transcoding causes a progressive loss of quality with each successive generation, known as digital generation loss.

I'd much rather just have the problem fixed.

I'm just saying if I wanted to solve the problem, converting my library to M4A would work, as MP3's are causing the issue (or perhaps, the prescense of M4A's anywhere at all completely breaks MP3's, I don't know.)

Interesting thought, though not a pretty fix, if it works, it's something for the devs to think about. It does fit though - I started buying new music downloads in m4a format wherever possible, and have had no problems with them - just the oldies in my collection. Where possible I try to redownload in m4a if the vendor allows - if not, then a bulk conversion weekend may be on the cards 🙂

Windows 7 64-bit, Acer. Same issue.

I don't even want to pay for premium now because of this issue. I emailed the Spotify team last week and haven't heard a word back. I've downloaded Quicktime, the codecs, uninstalled and reinstalled both Spotify and quicktime, turned off crossfade and gapless playback, disabled hardware acceleration, every suggestion here, I've tried. The only way it will play is if I convert my mp3 files to m4a and my music library is too large to convert them all. I'm ready to just uninstall it. A friend recommended it to me, but sadly I won't be able to use it for my local music because it refuses to work 😕

It's been almost a year and still no fix.

After trying different things I've ended up with a "mp3 folder" and a "m4a folder".

Installing Quicktime did the trick for me, different codecs didn't.

I'm not gonna bother merging filestypes into same dir again, in case, but maybe some of you can try testing a folder pr format and mapping both up?

No idea if it'll help you, but may be worth a shot.

All my songs are in mp3 format. I have far too many to even consider converting them all to m4a.

I'm sure nobody at Spotify actually gives a crap, but I now have a new problem. See screencap:

This issue is usualy solved by running spotify as administrator, had it myself a while back.

For more detailed instructions i suggest reading the solution in this thread:

http://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Mac-and/There-is-a-problem-with-your-sound-card-S...

Thanks for the tip, Rexiru.

I managed to solve the issue myself by shutting Spotify down and reinstalling the older version that's been working so far (0.6.2).

However, the main problem still exists. Spotify still stops after local songs.

I had an issue playing a few local mp3 files in Spotify. These would not play no matter what I tried (all my other mediaplayers can play the songs).

So I went to this forum and found a suggested solution to install the Fraunhofer codec. Afer installing the codec I manage to play the files. Joy all around.

However I also was introduced to the "Spotify stops after each local song" syndrome going on en masse going by the google hits on the problem. Actually I prefer my old bug in Spotify 😞 especially since I mostly play local mp3 files.

I had to join the many here stating the obvious, that this bug needs to be fixed. I cannot come to think of many bugs more crippling for a mediaplayer! Not holding my breath though since I can tell from this thread that Spotify is apparently busy working on other features that is of no use what so ever if you cannot play any songs (yes I'm miffed)!

A side question since everyone here is dealing with local files. Is anyone else using spotify free that is not able to sync ONLY selected playlists? As of the last update for android I cannot do this anymore and can only sync all local files. Which is a huge waste of space since I do not want all my mp3s on my phone...

Just want to say i have this problem and after coming back to this post from time to time for a solution, i'm sad that there isn't anything on this as of yet 😞

I've been having this problem since i had to give my computer a fresh boot of windows 7, since then i've had this problem, the main thing for me however seems that Spotify lets me play my local .m4a files (iTunes), but it doesnt play any local .mp3 files unless i select the single file to play..

also ive noticed that if you have files like this lined up in an order to play like m4a > m4a > mp3 > mp3, it will play the first two m4a songs and the mp3 song after that, but it will stop and not play the last mp3 song, the time indicator at the bottom won't even show.

After my laptop getting this problem, it's now spread to my PC. I've been using my laptop alot lately, since I bought it new this year and it was faster than my PC. A few weeks ago i've put some upgrades in my PC (GFX, etc) and now it's finally faster than my laptop, so i've been using it as my main computer recently.

I've reinstalled Windows on it, since there was a corruption on my old boot disk (I've installed Windows on my new SSD, so I could still acces my old HDD). Spotify was one of the first applications i've installed and everything was going well. I've gotten my old Music library back from my old HDD and imported everything in Spotify. Still working perfectly. Untill I've gotten to certain local songs that wouldn't play... I quickly discoverd that these were m4a files.

No worries, i've seen posts about it on the Spotify forums. After a quick search I came across installing Quicktime and installing Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder. I installed both... Now I can play the m4a files, but now I have the same problem as my laptop had: It won't play the next local song... After uninstalling Quicktime, the problem still exists and deleting said codec seems impossible (i cant find it anywhere and google didnt help).

I've never had this problem on my PC (before or after upgrade). I did however have this problem from the start on my laptop. Both are running Windows 7 Proffesional SP1. Problem started occuring after installing Quicktime and the Frauhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder. Hope this helps in investigating the problem

Afer installing Fraunhofer MP3 Codec and receiving this problem I have tried uninstalling the codec to the original ones that came with windows.

First I used Nirsoft InstalledCodec v1.25 to disable the Fraunhofer codec

(located at C:\Windows\System32\l3codeca.acm).

When I did this Spotify could no longer play any songs. Ok seemed promising since this should mean this is the codec used by Spotify. I could still play music in Windows Media Player -Windows 8 so I guess it uses a DirectShow codec or something.

I then deleted the file (need to grant full rights to local Administrator account on the file to be able to delete it)

Then I did a repair on system files using the command "SFC /Scannow" (CMD - run as admin).

Great, the original files restored. But when trying it out again still the same problem.

Then as a last resort I tried another tip suggested in the forum, to install Spotify 0.8.5.133 (downloaded from http://www.filehorse.com/download-spotify/old-versions/). The results? Of course the problem remains.

I suppose this means I will abandon Spotify except for some occacional visits when I just want to find a new song or two and not actaully listening to music...

I posted this in case there are somebody out there with more patience than I, that would want to give it a go finding what is causing the problem.

I'm sure not counting on Spotify to help us considering the rediculous FAQ reply on this problem, "if you're not getting continuous play ... there might be a problem ... Was this article helpful?". Oh yes it was brilliant! Well enough sarcasm from me. Bye

Marked as solution

Solution: It worked for me, and i have tested most things in this forum. I got this problem when i deleted a mega codec folder because i thought it wasn't something i needed... So i figured it most be something with the codecs. Found this and tested it and it worked.

Download K lite mega codec pack. During install if something about removing other codec packs or broken codecs from the registry comes up click yes. Maybe for those who upgraded to windows 8 got their codecs broken and thats why they got this problem.

Download link:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_mega_codec_pack.htm

Hope it works for you guys! Since this is a very annoying problem. Good thing is it doesn't require to download old versions.

Edit: Seems like the problem was the broken codecs so install it and remove the broken codecs. Either do it during install or using the codec tweaking tool after install. Can probably be uninstalled after removing the broken codecs.

Thank you! I installed the latest version "K-Lite_Codec_Pack_995_Mega.exe", made sure the fix codec options were selected, and lo and behold it actually worked! I have also tried to uninstall the codec again, because I'm not a fan of using codec packs unless I have to; and even better it still worked! To repeat my problem was that that it stopped playing the next song when I had the file in my local collection. I have seen others with slightly different problems here so not sure if this solution will work for everybody. But quick solution to try anyway. Thanks again for saving my sanity. 🙂

I can confirm that Mirreducki's solution worked! The codec tweaking tool also has an option to remove broken codecs, so i did it there as well, just to be sure 🙂
