Windows 10 - Spotify crashes if I unplug a usb headset without headphones in

My Question or Issue

I have a windows 10 laptop. I often have to go into meetings so plug in USB headset, then come out the meeting, take the usb headset out and THEN plug in headphones

If I don't plug my ear/headphones in to the normal audio output BEFORE i unplug the headset, spotify won't play through my headphones (I forget quite often 😞 )

If I close spotify and re open it I get a "The Spotify Application is not responding"

I have to restart my laptop to fix it. 

I have already uninstalled an reinstalled spotify but it hasn't fixed it

Maybe I am missing a way to get it to play back on my headphones? It could be it'sa Laptop setting maybe, but even so, it is strange that  if I close it, I always get the "not responding" error
