Windows 10, Spotify freezes PC randomly after Creators Update

Solved!

Windows 10, Spotify freezes PC randomly after Creators Update

After I updated to the latest version of Windows 10, namely the creators update, the spotify desktop app completely freezes my PC while playing music (seemigly at random). It makes weird static noises and then everything freezes and I have to hit the reset button. I tried the following:

  • disabling Hardware acceleration
  • reinstalling the Spotify app
  • Reinstalling/updating the video-card ( AMD if that matters)
  • Reinstalling/updating the audio-driver

I tried checking the Event log, but except the messages for me restarting the computer, nothing shows up. For now I'm using the web player, but I'd rather use the app. Can anyone help?

So I thought maybe the problem had been fixed since it didn't happen for about a week or so, since I had changed everything in the settings that might eat my computer's resources, but ... NOPE. Happened again just yesterday:
Complete freeze as soon as Spotify tried to start up. I had to use the reset button to hard-reset, and afterwards I had to sort all my icons back to where they belonged on my two screens because they ended up all clustered on my main screen again. I am getting quite tired of this. If this doesn't get resolved by the time my three month trial period ends, I'm gone for another service, simple as that. Cheers.

Does Spotify people respond to these postings? Everyone is left hanging with their problems. Great customer service. Does anyone know if we can directly contact Spotify?

Well I attempted to work through it with their on-line chat support. The problem was, that whn they asked me to launch the desktop app, my computer would freeze, and so I would loose the connection with the agent I was chatting to. By the time I reconnected, I ended up with someone else, to whom I had to explain the whole thing again, and so around in circles. I have given up talking to Spotify about this. I have 2 months left on my 3 months for 99p Deezer offer (not had any Deezer problems); so that's how long Spotify have to solve the problem.

I had the same issue as another user who sought help from Spotify. The first thing I was asked was to log into my app to give them the version that I was running.  I can't log into the app because my computer crashes! The next suggestion was to call when I'm logged in!! A complete denial that others are complaining about this issue. I put a link to this community site on my twitter feed asking Spotify to have a look and see how many people, not just me, are having issues. Guess what the reply was.....Please get in touch when you're logged into spotify so that we can help!!! No acknowledgement of my link to here and acceptance of issue. When is someone from Spotify going to say 'Yes, we have a major issue and will be working to resolve it before you all leave spotify premium'!

On my machine Spotify Windows Store Edition, doesn't change anything. Spotify hangs my Windows 10. Only Web Player is working without freezing. 😕

....the same as many of us 😞

One more with this problem. 😞
Axé Wowa!

The latest version 1.0.59 did not resolved this problem. My system W10 hangs again and again, when Spotify is active.

It makes me wonder if anyone from Spotify actually reads the forums - I have seen no official response to this problem...

Goodbye Spotify

Interestingly, I had uninstalled Spotify about a month ago due to this exact issue as I could no longer listen to my music without the fear of losing other things I was working on. I thought by now they'd have fixed it and that I'd install it again, but I can't run the risk again so I had to check here first.

Extremely disappointed this is still a problem, Spotify!

I'm on Windows 10 CU here as well, though I have no issues...To anyone having issues, especially if the freezing accompanies distorted audio...A) make sure your computers audio drivers are up to date (might also want to check Video drivers as well) and B) Disable all audio enhancements (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/disable-audio-enhancements-windows-10).

I am also  experiencing this with the latest version of Windows 10 Enterprise.

I have performed a variety of troubleshooting such as installing latest drivers, uninstalling and deleting %appdata%/spotify and re-installing.

Sometimes when I boot the issue seems to be related to the Non-paged pool that Spotify use close to 20-30GB. I have 32GB RAM. The spotify memory usage does not show up on Task Manager but rather in something like Proc Explorer

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

My computer and applications run significanlty faster when I set spotify to not start with windows and don't open it at all.

I've done a computer reload + memory test before I found out that spotify was the culprit.

If this is not fixed soon I will have no choice but to move elsewhere

Marked as solution

My Spotify program would freeze my computer after I opened the program. About 10s after opening the program, it would freeze my computer as it tried to load the Browse page.

I have however found a solution to my problem, which is using the app and not program. This is what occurred as I tried to find a solution to my  problem:

  • I installed the Spotify app from the Windows Store.
  • I then opened the app after installation and saw that the app started to transfer data from the Spotify program to the app.
  • Once the app finished transferring data, it opened the app itself and started to load the Browse page. The page loaded in a few seconds but I still waited about a minute to see if my computer would freeze, which it did not.
  • I then proceeded opened up different pages in the app and then eventually started playing music just to make sure my computer would not freeze whilst using the app. My computer, thankfully, did not freeze or slow down at any point whilst I "experimented" with the app.
  • After that I proceeded to Programs and Features in the Control Panel to see if the Spotify program was still installed and saw that it was removed (most likely it was removed by the app after the data transfer).

After that was done I had no problems again. Spotify is working as it should without freezing my computer and so far I have found that the app works a lil faster than the program did

I also have this same problem, and the only solution is to use the version in the browser of the internet, format my pc, I did as much advice as I found and that is the only solution

Same problem here.......

Tried to uninstall app, delete all Spotify folders and files, delete all Spotify related registry entries (Blue Screen of Dead, of course...), reinstall app...and......surprise!!! Spotify crashes again....

....and so it continues but no solution from Spotify! The only communication I get from them is "Congratulations! You have a new rank in the Spotify Community" every time someone comments on my post! How pointless is that? I'd like to be able to say to Spotify 'Congratulations for resolving this issue...at last!!!!!' but they don't seem at all interested in doing that....

None of the stated solutions worked for me,

I updated nvidia geforce driver and until it required updating again, spotify worked perfectly, when i got the notification for "nvidia update" spotify stopped working. I updated the driver again and now spotify is also working 🙂

Same here. Freezes my OS after 10 seconds from closing Spotify. LOL 😄

Same here. Working fine until a few days ago and now crashes my Windows 10pc. Ran the windows software troubleshooter which recommended running spotify in Windows 8 compatibility mode. Low and behold it crashed my pic again when running it in the compatible mode. Really frustrating.
