Add support for Android TV

Status: implemented

Android TV is Google's latest take on Android for the TV and is released with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The first device running Android TV is Google's own device Nexus Player.

The good thing with Android TV is that it runs regular Android apps with some modifications and it also has built in support for Google Cast.

Starting today, you’ll find Spotify on Android TV devices including Sony’s BRAVIA, NVIDIA SHIELD, Philips and the Bbox Miami by Bouygues Telecom. Click here for a complete list of all devices that support Android TV.

Got my Nexus Player yesterday and much to my surprise - no Spotify support? Come on people, my 10 year old PS3 has a Spotify app! Granted, it's not a work of art, but it's there!

 

Android TV is by far the most explosively rising smart TV platform out there - are you really not going to tap into that market?

This is the best reason to switch to google music - I want spotify but I don't want to have a chromecast and a nexus player - I might as well switch to google music since I can't use my nexus player for spotify.

Well the Nexus Player does have built-in Chromecast functionality, so there's no reason to have both a Chromecast and a Nexus Player...

I still dont see why paying users cant just cast to an Google Cast device as Android TV is?!

It's esayer for Spotify to support Only the Google cast function of the android tv, because the chromecast is alredy supported... I can't unterstand why the cast function of android tv isn't unlocked?!?

Even if there is no native app for Android TV (which would be cool in itself and could Spotify Connect) then at the very least the iOS and Android mobile apps should be able to utilise the Google Cast functionality of Android TV in the same way that Chromecast is currently supported.

Spotify Connect is the solution since there is no native app for a Android TV. That's their goal. Denon and Marantz receivers, as well as the Gramofon music streaming device all of Spotify Connect Capability, and it pretty much makes having Chromecast support a bit redundant.

Come on guys!  to many people asking for this!  We pay for the service, we love it, spotyfy is acting like the government, people clamoring for change and they only become deaf ears.

 

It can't be that hard to develop the app for android TV, I have my new sony TV and I have to use an unofficial app to listen to my music on TV, this is not right!

Since you updated the Amazon Spotify app a few days ago, you might wanna upload the update to the Android TV?

Otherwise there is no way around switching to Google play music -.-
