[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Please add the feature to block explicit songs.

What idiot at Spotify thought it was okay to use the language in the Viceland ad? Thankfully my child was not in the room. Have some class people.

New commenters, please do all of these items that @paul_mccrorey has suggested:

1. Go to the App store for your particular device and give the a 1 star rating stating that lack of "explicit" filter is the reason

2. Email support@spotify.com and indicate to them your intentions

3. Tweet @SpotifyCares @spotify  and demand they put an Explicit filter

4. If you feel comfortable, visit a website we put together to try and focus efforts;   http://spotifyexplicitbutton.com

This will hopefully keep the pressure on. If Spotify is indeed working on this feature, it would be great if they'd announce it and give us a timeline.

I wish news organizations would pick up this story about how a company like Spotify, that wants to go public, can't even deliver a feature that has been asked for/demanded by customers for 5 1/2 years.

  • Why does the CEO (Daniel Ek...who has 2 younger kids) refuse to direct his team to make this happen?  Does he let his kids be exposed to anything that's out there?  I get he's a liberal but he has no boundaries as to what his kids are listening to?
  • Who is charge of customer support @ Spotify?  Customer support leaders @ spotify should be fired for complete disregard for customers (no update since Nov 2016????).  And messages to/responses from @ spotifycares are completely useless.
  • Whoever is charge of product management should be fired for not delivering features that customers are demanding.  Basic product management principles being disregarded...
  • Where are the Spotify investors?  Shouldn't they be concerned about the cancelations, lack of competitive feature set, and negative publicty?
  • Why does Spotify roll out a family plan but refuses to deliver (let alone respond with "we're working on it") features that make Spotify family friendly?
  • Why is it that Spotify idea board filters out profanity but their core music platform doesn't have that capabiity?

None of this makes any sense and speaks to a very immature company run by very immature, self-serving people.

The only things that will make Spotify roll out explicit filters (and listen to its customers) is a) bad publicity and/or b) potential damage to their revenue stream.  I think the press would be very interested in this story...

paul_mccrorey

@rbaumert  THAT is an Excellent Idea - getting the press to report something about this.  Oddly enough, IMHO most of the media wouldn't see a problem with this I am guessing.  But either way - How would you propose we go about doing that?  Anyone here have the contacts to get that done.  I am thinking the MSM wouldn't be an outlet that would carry it.

@corybowe thx for putting the steps up there.  I think we add a step 5 - contact the media...I just honestly don't know how to get that done.

All ears.

I recently did do a search on how to port out playlists from Spotify to Apple music.  There are some steps out there.  Honestly, this is the only thing keeping me here at the moment.  It's really because I don't want to deal with building playlists #lazy.  The only other thing is that I am holding out hope that enough of us will respond and make something happen.  But then I keep looking in the mirror thinking - why am I funding these people? right now - it's because of my personal playlists that i've built.  So that's my issue.

But - looking at Apple music as an alternative - cost wise seems similar for the family plan.  I think they have an explicit filter.  I just don't know enough about.   Any other people on here have experience?  Any suggestions on how to port a playlist from #FilthyMouthSpotify?

Apple Music absolutely will let you restrict explicit music. They will even let you set it and lock it for your kids accounts.  I came over to Spotify from Apple Music because I like the Spotify remote control features.  I just loathe the fact that I can't let the radio play in front of my wife and kids without having to hover by my phone and hit the next button every 3 minutes or risk getting an earful.

It's getting to the point where its not worth it.

I just emailed Fox News.  Maybe they will pick it up.

Also, why don't you try searching for "Explicit Button" as a topic.. Page 1 brings up comments from May, 2017.  The newest comments are burried deep on page 52.  It seems that they are messing around with the forum now.

Don't you love how this forum automatically censors speech but their service wont.

Nice play, Spotify.

Nice play

Apple Music is great. Explicit filter works.

Just pull the plug on Spotify and don't look back. It was hard for me too, but I am so glad I'm not giving these creeps any more money.

yeah, I believe they rolled it over back to the beginning and every new
comment erases an old one. Just ditch the service, they suck.
