[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Crikey.

I would love to live in a world where the F word was used in emergencies and not every 4th song in a play list. Especially as my children are in my world. Please let me choose to not have explicit content visible or playable in my lists.

When will this feature be available? There are so many playlists that have explicit content that I don't want to listen to. I want to just press play and listen without worrying about it. Is there a reason that this is not being acted upon?

I previously added my support for filtering out songs with explicit content. Now I have voted with my wallet by cancelling my paid subscription and commencing a paid subscription with a competitor that has this feature, your loss Spotify is Apple's gain

I vote yes for filtering explicit material

I think it's hilarious this note that "we at spotify all think that this is a great idea...." and yet for years they haven't fiugred out how to do it.  It's easy, they just don't want to, for whatever reason.  I was thinking about becoming a paying customer but now I'm having second thoughts.  They are losing some customers over this, not a lot but some, and money is at the bottom of everything so I'm wondering in the back of my mind how they are getting more money by refusing to implement this and losing some customers.  My guess is major music labels might be insisting that we have to listen to it their way, they don't care how the customer feels about it.  Which opens up the whole Pandora's box (ahem, sorry, no reference to a competitor intended) of what the entertainment industry values and how they want to force people into their own worldview.  And they somehow want to call this a "censorship" issue, which is bologna...while I wouldn't be too surprised if they censor this comment.

I would like this, just something that would filter the explicit songs - or skip them and not play them

It can get awkward with just a couple of those songs (that are great) in a playlist, but playing in a public setting

The thing is the top 50 UK is made up of AirPlay on radio etc, therefore any argument that the recording companies wanting us to listen to music as the artist intended is a load of tosh, as without the AirPlay that is generally the clean version they would not even be on the list. Also we could also argue the Spotify are breaching the rules by placing songs on a supposedly to 50 chart that is not really true as the explicit version on the charts are not the versions that are the popular ones, therefore falsely advertising.
However this is not it, it’s Spotify not wanting or can’t be bothered to do anything, as folks like us have no way of getting our points across or be heard. We only have this forum that it seems they don’t even look at or pay any attention to.
I am a paying customer and they have pissed me off so much I have no choice but to leave.

Spotify do p-iss you off. However don't forget to hang around and contribute to this forum from time to time. If enough customers and ex customers do this there is just a chance that it may even p-iss them off eventually. Latest update over a year ago was unsigned. Here is a bet that the next one will be unsigned too!

"Hello everyone, Spotify Staff here again. We wanted to let you all know we still think this is a good idea. We don't have any specific updates for you on this but we hear your feedback that you are interested in filtering explicit content. If we any information to share on this feature request I will post here first. Thanks folks!"   There is an expression here in Australia "Feeding the chooks" that would pretty well cover that. Of course the obvious "Bulls-hit" would work too. As I said, unsigned.

I have embraced the idea of setting an email filter to forward any emails from this thread to support@spotify.com

Maybe it will help 🙂
