[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I suggest also giving the app a 1 star review and the reason why in Google play or Apple iTunes.

Give the app a 1 star review and state the reason clearly. I just did. You are wasting your breath on this forum

GOOD NEWS!!!!

parents that have worries and have premium accounts there's this brand new function that spotify has given us all that filters explicit lyrics so you can play music at parties or at your job without listening to profanity! it's called...... MAKING A PLAYLIST OF ALL THE SONGS YOU KNOW AND LOVE AND WANT TO PLAY AT A PARTY THAT DOESN'T HAVE A LOT OF CUSSING.... so stop being lazy and just do that and you will have no issues. stop crying over this for years when you had an easy solution from DAY FREAKING ONE..... and parents say it's the children that are lazy........ >.>

what you all have to remember is this. YES it is a good thing to have some censoring with the music on spotify. NO its not ok to have children accidentally hear a ton of profanity in music especially if you are having a family party. BUT! there is a thing called record labels that you all are completely forgetting. spotify would have to contact every single one of them and TRY to get permission to have this feature work for their song and they have to strike the same deal with every single record label that has an artist on spotify. that's a ton of legal work to do at this point ontop of their original contract they have. they would have to wait until the contract can be renewed to be able to edit the contract.

@darkstylez

Why would you even waste your time writing that? The point of the service is that we don't have to sit down for hours, manually creating custom playlists.

And it's not just about kids; sometimes grown adults don't care for profanity, but still want to... I don't know... discover new music (insert Spotify's tag line: "Music for Everyone").

Somehow, rather miraculously, radio stations manage this massive feat every day. But what do I know, apparently you're the lawyer.

Thank you Darkstylez for that helpful and informative post.  I can tell you've given a lot of thought to this issue cause your solution solves every problem with explicit lyrics.  Like what to do when you're listening to Spotify Radio or a channel that's been created to serve up music based on an artist, song or genre someone likes (as today there's no way to keep songs with explicit lyrics from playing)?

Or what about the case where artists (yes, believe it or not some artists actually release two versions of a song or album so they can get their music played more broadly and make more money selling to a target demographic that won't listen to explicit music) release two versions of a song or album, an Explicit version and a Clean version, and someone prefers listening to the Clean version and not the Explicit?  So far my experience on Spotify has been I don't even get the choice to listen to clean versions of albums or songs that artists have published.  So let's see, your idea doesn't address either of those scenarios.

As for me, I'm not asking for censorship.  I will never ask for that.  I'm asking for the simple ability to either not play music that has explicit lyrics, or in the case where a clean version exists play that instead.  I love free speach and will fight for the right for anyone to say, publish, etc., whatever they want.  But as a consumer I should also have the right to choose whether or not I want to listen to explicit content particularly on a PRODUCT/SERVICE THAT I'M PAYING FOR.

@darkstylezI don't want to censor the music. I want to CHOOSE when to listen to it. You are correct that I could create a play list for every single scenario. The thing is most people do not have time to get into the detail of hand picking every single track in a play list. It's 300 mile drive to my parents. It can take up to 9 hours. Can you tell me 5 hours in advance if I need banging tunes for cruising along the motorway or something chilled out while sitting in a 5 mile tailback? As for re-contracting that is cobblers. As you just stated... this is actually just functionality for on the fly play list creation.

@darkstylez Did you know that you can get from one place to another without a car? Just put one foot in front of the other AND REPEAT until you get to where you need to go. So let's cancel all flights from New York to California because it's just these entitled travelers being lazy. It only takes a few months to walk that distance so stop being lazy and just walk everywhere. Sounds kinda idiotic to apply your reasoning to other situations, doesn't it. So they need to renegotiate every contract eventually anyway, why not start now? I could use your reasoning and tell spotify it just takes effort, so stop being lazy. See, works both ways.

I think its clear Spotify has no plans to be responsive to their customers.  Its not like this is a feature no one else has.  Time to trial Apple Music and see if it fits my family's needs better.
