[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I've done some playing about and found that you can do this on Apple Music by restricting Explicit Lyrics under the restrictions menu on their Apple device. It works well and the family subscription is the same price as Spotify but it's a mute point if your not running on Apple kit. I'd much prefer to stay with Spotify than to move to Apple Music but I have two young kids that like to play music on their iPods and I need to restrict what they listen too.

**Update, I've used "Babel - Spotify To Apple Music" app to transfer all my Spotify playlists to Apple Music. Simplistic app to use but got the job done easily and only costs £1.49 in the App Store. The only one caveat is that you need to turn on "iCloud Music Library" in Music settings.

I've done exactly the same and for the same reasons. Cancelled Spotify
Orem and moved to Apple Family. My wife doesn't like Apple Music much but
is having to live with it. We'll come back to Spotify when they implement
an Explicit filter.

Finally got an answer.  I have a friend of a friend who's brother is a main developer for Spotify.  We were able to ask him about filtering explicit songs and he was able to give us insight into the issue.  He said that Spotify has some of the top software developers anywhere and that they just haven't been able to solve the explicit filter issue.  They have been working for years on it and at one time were really close but the lead developer on the team left and went to Apple.  Apple paid the guy millions because he has been the only person to come close to solving the explicit filter issue.  He said his team at Spotify has tried really hard to crack the issue but fears that they will never be able to do that.  He suggested anyone that needs that functionality should move to Apple Music.  At least that way the consumer can enjoy it over there.

He did mention though that exciting things were coming from all of their hard efforts.  He felt really strong that his development team at Spotify was really close to being able to offer the ability to change the background color of the app from black to either white or blue.  He feels that if they are given another couple of years they may even be able to offer it in red.  They are really excited about that and feel that it shows their development expertise even though they can't figure out the explicit filter issue.  He also mentioned the the guy that figured the filter out and moved to Apple is now set for life after having solved such a difficult development issue.  He is being sought by companies all over the world for his expertise.  Too bad Spotify let him get away.

Good one tfbruin. You had me going there for a while, but then I realized it's a joke 😉

I completely agree!!! Please spotify - implement this option. You have already identified explicit songs, so it can't be that hard for people to opt out of listening to them.

Please update us Spotify on the progress of this intiative!!!

How about a simple method. Nice Spotify give music the explicit label, the toggle switch looks for anything with that label.

Send the millions my way 🙂
