[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

If a button isn't so easy to add, just give us something in the settings that allows you to filter out explicit content.  I've just recently subscribed to Spotify Family and this option would help me decide to keep on subscribing.  I don't want you to censor it but would love to have the option to choose not to listen to it without having to keep a constant eye on the playlist or just not play a great playlist because of the presence of a few songs I personally don't want to listen to or have my children hearing.

I listen to spotify at work and could really use this option! Pandora has the option but I prefer using spotify.

Thanks!

This is a great idea, however, so many songs that have explicit lyrics are not marked in Spotify as explicit!  Unless that bug is fixed first, an explicit button isn't going to do what we want.

Good point! They could also create an option where users can mark something as explicit. Someone at spotify can confirm. That could speed it up! Or there has got to be a program.

I guess I'm getting to someone.  My post have been removed and I've been scolded for talking like the music that we want banned.

Below is the message I recieved.  While I fully admit that I was not nice, it was definety on topic and within the spirit of the thread.

Hi there,

I wanted to pop you a note to explain why we had to remove your last posts.

The posts themselves went against some of our Spotify Community Guidelines, specifically point VIII:

  1. Always use an appropriate and respectful language when you post information in the Community. Avoid racist, sexist, or otherwise offensive language that could be considered detrimental to other users, or Spotify employees or moderators.

Spotify users are coming to the Community for help with their questions and to discuss Spotify related services. In the future, please keep your posts relevant to the threads and to Spotify's services and customers.

Thanks and if you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to get in touch with me here.

All the best,

Is Spotify going to add a way to sensor Explicit music?   its embarissing to have the F bomb floating in the air with my mom and grandchildren in the room. Please get family friendly or I will be finding a new service.

Update - I have contacted the BBC's consumer affairs team, and I suggest everyone in this thread email the CEO of Spotify. We as a community need to exert some pressure on a company that does not care about exposing children to explicit material.

  • So email into watchdog@bbc.co.uk and highlight your concerns
  • Email the CEO of Spotify Daniel Ek at [moderator edit]
  • [moderator edit]
  • Use the attached image as many times as you can.

Hi All,

I emailed Daniel Ek and received the folowing reply reproduced below verbatim.

It's quite clear that they have no intention of providing this feature, so lets stop wasting our time and move to Apple music.

My next payment is due 20th Jan I'll be gone before then.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for getting in touch with us. We understand your concerns with your children listening to explicit content on Spotify.

We realise that there has been a demand for parental controls on Spotify, but at this moment in time, we cannot say if and when this feature will be available.

We also have information about our minimum age requirements in our Terms & Conditions. You’ll find it in the table under Introduction.

If we have any updates on this feature at all, we will be sure to post it on the community page you linked to us. In the meantime, if you have any other good ideas you think other users would like too, be sure to add it to our ideas board.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you or if anything needs clarifying.

All the best,

Ben
