[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

In view of the years this has been requested, the simplicity of the function - and the number of kudos points it has collected - it is clear that Spotify have no intention of ever doing this.  This can only be due to a financial reason, decency and honor would dictate this was included from the start.  Lost revenue or fear of legal reprisals clearly win over decency, honor and customer care at Spotify.  They don't even have the decency to simply state this is not going to happen, just keep stringing us along!

Sad and disapointed . . .

This is probably one of the best moves Spotify can make, especially since pandora has it and it widens the range of listeners without taking any away. I think an Explicit search filter(that goes both ways & neutral) would be cool too, I'll post a thread later to get more popularity for the idea.

Spotify - really what are you doing?

Get a grip and give people the option to TURN OFF songs that have EXPLICIT content.

It makes me very angry that given you're a tech company and customer-focussed, you fail to address a basic concern of so many parents and users.

Where is the harm in allowing parental controls like most of the tech industry.

WHAT SORT OF WORLD DO YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO GROW UP IN Daniel Ek?

No doubt Daniel would have the greatest concern for the welfare of his children. It is only other peoples children he doesnt care about.

Add this now!

Agreed. How long is this going to take to do? Apple Music can't do it right either.

Spotify isn't going to add this filter. I spoke with customer service several times about this and they have explained to me that Spotify philisophically opposes explicit content filters because clean versions pervert the origional intent of the artist, and thereby censors art. It is an ideological choice.

Personally, I disagree. An explicit Content filter is no more censorship than thei genre filters? What is the difference between selecting "classical music" thereby "censoring" all non-classical music and selecting "explicit content free"? There is no difference except spotify itself is imposing a warped philisophical position on its consumers.

If you all really want all the features of Spotify, plus an explcit content filter, may I sugest Google Music. Heck, simply subscribe to youtube red for $10/mo. With that you get google play(gogle music, which is comparable to spotify in every way, plus an explicit content filter) and as a bonus you get ad free youtube, and youtube red premium content. The value of googles services is head and shoulders above spotify.

Now spotify, if you are reading this, Your interface and curation algerythms are superior to googles. BUT, the lack of explicit content filtering and googles addition of youtube red just completely break any advantage you have. Your refusal to give your customers the power to choose what they want to listen to in this regard is so experience breaking that it is driving hords of people away. May I sugest that you re-evaluate your position and come to terms with the fact that user drivin filtering is not censorship. Heck, you already provide this in every other filter and radiostation you provide, just expand one additional option so that your customers may create the listening experience that they want.

We don't need big brother telling us how to listen to music. Give us the power.

I would love this feature - my children listen to my spotify account and I would like them to be able to tag songs as explicit and to be able to filter them.
