[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I tried Amazon Music but they still don't have a filter either.  MUCH easier to find clean versions.

I've not been a big Apple fan BUT with this problem APPLE has got the best filter.  The Android App is working well so far and I think I'll be sticking with APPLE MUSIC.  There is a password lock on the filter also.

Bye Bye Spotify

This is a GREAt idea

Since Spotify doesn't seem to listen (or care), I suggest hammering Spotify (including the CEO, Daniel Ek) on twitter and other social media and tagging various news organizations...let's make this a public relations issue so they have to address.

I also fully support this idea.

Since each explicit track is already identified as such, it should be possible to implement.

Come on SPOTIFY there are over 8'000 users paying you over $80'000 per month, that had similar requests and decided to vote for this one.

I just sent the below email to as many news outlets as I could find...including techcrunch, billboard, etc.

Wanted to let you know about growing discontent in the Spotify community due to Spotify’s lack of parental controls/explicit filters.

https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-Ideas/Explicit-button/idi-p/3869/page/324#comments

  • Idea was first suggested on Spotify’s user community pages in February 2012.
  • Last public response from Spotify was in November 2016.  When Spotify does respond to individual user inquiries on this matter, they say that they “are looking into it” (or words to that effect).  For 5 ½ years they have been looking into it?
  • As of August 18, 2017, there are 8,938 votes for the idea (most of any topic, I believe)
  • As of August 18, 2017, there are 324 pages of comments where users are pleading, begging, expressing outrage, threatening to cancel, etc.
  • In May 2016, Spotify released it’s “Family” pricing plan.  While Spotify was quite happy to take $15/month from families, Spotify doesn’t provide ANY parental controls are ability to filter explicit lyrics.  Note:  I’m differentiating between parent controls and lyric filters in that a parent needs to be able to lock the setting to prevent kids from listening to explicit lyrics on family accounts.  Would also like the parent to be able to block certain artists on the family account.
  • Daniel Ek (https://twitter.com/eldsjal), Spotify co-founder and CEO, says on his twitter page that he is a father.  Does he let his children listen to explicit lyrics?
  • Spotify was quick to remove artists, etc that they classified as “Hate Music” but is doing nothing to allow parents/users to block explicit content that is vulgar, offensive, misogynist, drug filled, **bleep** filled, etc.
  • Spotify is trying to compete with Amazon, Pandora, Apple, and others yet doesn’t seem to be concerned that people are going to start canceling because of lack of this capability.  If I was an investor, I would be really concerned..

I am a father of 4 (inc. 2 teenagers) and Spotify user for past 3 months.  I’m not going to renew my 3 month/.99 cent trial because of this lack of parental controls/explicit lyric filter.

I would be happy to provide a quote or provide some more perspective.  Email and cell phone are below.

So, this is a 2012 idea. with a 2016 reply, " we are working on it".

No, you are not. Doesn't take 5 years to create a disable button. The company I work for didn't exist 5 years ago, thats how technology changes ... FAST.

For me, it's just not a priority and looks like will never be for Spotify. Wonder why?

Maybe it's time to take my subscription somewhere else... where I can let my kids browse the app and don't worry about an explicit music playing in the background.

Really strange that Spotify does not have this feature while offering family membership

Dianasaur78

Please make this happen soon! My kids are growing up and I want to give them their own Spotify account but not until there is a way to filter out explicit content. Thank you.

Is this happening yet?

Stevebeirne71

Please  add a new option to filter explicit songs . I have a young 9 yr  old daughter who loves music but there are so many songs with explicit lyrics , it is time we had the options for under 16 at the very least. I am no prude I count dead Kennedys and anti nowhere league among my favourite artists but that is my choice. Please do something asap .thankyou.
