[Android] Android Widget

Having a home screen widget for Android would be really nice. All other media players have one on Android so it'd be great to see that in Spotify too. It'd make things so much easier to just be able control to Spotify from your home screen instead of swiping down for the notification bar or opening the app. It's really simple functionality so please can you add it.

Hey folks,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this idea in the Community.

We’re excited to let you know the Android Widget is back. To get listening, make sure you’re on the latest version of the app and Spotify will show in the widget menu on your device. The widget is now resizable too and some stability issues have been fixed.

We appreciate your passion for this feature and want to thank you all for your feedback!

How about you restore this function by tonight. You dont even have to code anything, just revert to the previous version and don't f*** it up again.

You are really trying to improve the app in places where noone was asking for improvement, aren't you? First you are being annoying with your car view notifications, and now you removed the widget. I spent so much time over the last days to find out how I can make the app less annoying and more useable again. But it seems you just want to make sure the useability sucks more and more with each update. That's it for me, I will cancel my spotify premium and take the money somewhere else.

Stop removing things for no reason and calling it innovation. My main way of going thru the app was through my widget. The drop down does not work as well and only works when phone is unlocked. It gets pretty annoying not seeing my widget on my home page. Been a day 1 customer, please bring back the android widget or I'll start looking for a music app that does.

Why does spotify continuously remove or break features that work well? Stop shooting yourselves in the foot, or youI'l cause customers to look elsewhere.

By the way, don't you have peer reviews or management reviews before somebody disables a popular feature? Maybe everybody was taking August off, and some intern decided do something bold and become famous. It would help calm your angry customers if you could explain what twisted logic led you to this decision. Also, could you let us know whether you actually read any of these comments, or do you just count the pages?

Proposal:
You bring back the widget quickly (meaning right now)... And we forget all about this ugly idea and misbehaven ...

Please bring it back. Removing it was not a great idea. Many times the notification disappears on my Pixel 3XL device and I have to re-open spotify app.

All things Spotify don't seem to pay much heed too anymore:

If it's not broke, don't fix it

Don't rock the boat

Stay on the autobahn

KISS - keep it simple stupid

There is beauty in simplicity

In anticipation of an indifferent, patronising pat on the head thanks for your feedback response or the potential criticism that the above idioms are too simplistic a criticism, I reply thus:

The simplest things are often the truest.

Richard Bach 😉

Except when I go on a rant then that's when its okay to be less simple.

I assume change for changes sake is the new primary development philosophy of company?

In the last couple of years the app has lost functionality for no real good reason, first annoying thing that got my attention and other loyal users attention I noted at the time; was adding a layer of menu selection, just to use the 'sort by' feature for my tracks. Then the only layer of functionality about a year down the line you remove is the widget! Are you... kidding me! Something that you have to actively look for and place on screen as a user, its not like bloatware, it's a genuine useful feature that improves functionality without cluttering things up, it's a really good bolt on, why reduce performance of product, is it to fit some kind of OCD development aesthetic?

Or like most users who are posting and complaining and being ignored as usual, just wait for a decent enough competitor to come along and take our business I guess, in the mean time I'll have to trundle along with a lesser service; thanks. Its not like a marmite decision where you could put off or annoy other users by leaving the widget, is there a thread on unaware of with literally tons of users piling in to complain about that **bleep** annoying widget, please point me that way and ill love to get stuck in over there. Your just annoying users who usually find efficient ways to interface with things. unfortunately for us we are often the lazy ones so you know we won't likely leave but don't always bank on this, things are getting easier/lazier all the time in the digital service world thank god. When something comparable comes along that is not in a death spiral of over tweaking, we will be off and likely never come back.

Also please can we get a better response than: Use another way to access player like use top drop down in notifications. Why not have both? You are creating another layer of unnecessary complication as you have to actively swip to access this. Is there anyone at a senior level who can speak their mind, who thinks this is a good idea? Someone who is not lower ranks who has to repeat the party line or feel the potential pressure to repeat it.

Sigh.

Ok rant done.

I looked at my screen this morning and realized something was different.  I thought I had accidently removed the widget and went to put it back but I couldn't find it.  I found a news story saying it had been killed.  Is there even a reason to revert functionality?  I used it every day.  I'll look into alternative pay music services I guess and try them out.

I used it daily.
